Deadsplinter Up! All Night: Shadowboxing with Giants

Julien Baker is a singer-songwriter from Bartlett, Tennessee and her music is devastatingly beautiful. Her debut album Sprained Ankle was released in 2015 and Shadowboxing off her second album Turn Out the Lights was released in 2017 and she’s only 24. Her music about her struggles with addiction, heartbreak, and depression are intertwined with a feeling of hopefulness that even though life may be bleak, eventually there is a light out of the darkness. She dropped out of Middle Tennessee State originally to focus on touring, but earlier this week she graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in English.

On a personal level, Julien is one of my favorite artists in recent years. Visiting New York had been on my bucket list for my entire life and last summer I finally crossed that goal off by seeing Julien open for Courtney Barnett at Celebrate Brooklyn at Prospect Park. She was only able to play a few songs because it was raining. Shadowboxing was one of the songs she played that day. A few months later, she and musicians Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Daucus formed the band boygenius.

  1. Great job, Boop! Glad to see you hosting DUAN!

Well, Ian Astbury never did become the next Jim Morrison, but he and Billy Duffy still managed to rock the world as The Cult!

And from the looks of this video, they’ve still got it!

  2. All,
I’ve made a few improvements to the functionality of this site so I recommend everyone (after posting to this beautiful DUAN of course) logout, clear cache in web-browser, restart web-browser, log back in…and star and comment more on DUAN. ALSO, you can now upload images/docs/etc. as attachments in the comments section and you will receive notifications when someone stars your posts/comments.

    Boop,
Thank you for posting this beautiful DUAN!

  3. Hard to post Christmas music with all the serious songs! I’ll post one of those too but I’m obligated to do at least an anti-Christmas Christmas song.

  4. When I moved away from Hawaii one song always made me cry when I heard it & it seemed like they loved to play it on the airplane just to make it worst. This time of year I miss the Ohana back home and this song makes me think of them. Side note, Karen Carpenter did a cover of this song & these two brothers that wrote this song don’t even talk to each other anymore…sad story!

    • i listen to 97.3 in Toronto whilst creating colours and this song makes me move every time it comes on
