Betty Wright passed away Sunday at the age of 66. She was one of the great female soul voices of the 60’s and 70’s, and had her biggest hit with the classic Clean Up Woman. She started out singing gospel in her family’s group, The Echoes of Joy when she was just 4 years old, and released her first solo album at the age of 14. That started a career which covered six decades and featured countless singles that charted both in America and overseas. Here she is having a great time lip synching to her 1974 hit Shoorah! Shoorah! on the Dutch show TopPop.
Although the hits dried up in the 90’s, Betty achieved legend status as the new millennium rolled around, and mentored many current artists as well as having a good chunk of her old material sampled. And, as you can see, her afro was epic.
Thank you for your continued support of Deadsplinter!
