DeadSplinter Up! All Night: Sing me a River

I have this song on my playlist three times in a row – it just speaks to me and makes me want to dance a little. I think these words are beautiful:

“Sing me a river
Go easy on me, I’m not doing too well
Do you hate me, honey
As much as I hate myself?
Heart like a levee”

Haven’t we all felt this way? The corollary is to surround oneself with people who love you more than you love yourself.

Heart Like a Levee, Hiss Golden Messenger

Or you can always Take Me To the River. The Talking Heads released More Songs About Buildings and Food in July of 1978. I was 19 years old, and dancing on rooftops in the city. A friend worked at a record store and brought home the distro copies of new music. The party never stopped, and the background music was amazing, from Ry Cooder to Joan Armatrading to the Cars to Wayne County and the Electric Chairs . . . great variation. This version even has cowbells 😊.

What songs about rivers do you have, or, what music speaks to you so loudly that you need it more than once on your playlists?

  1. “surround oneself with people who love you more than you love yourself”
Great advice, I wish someone had told me this when I was young. Who am I kidding? I wouldn’t have listened.
There are so many good river songs. I’ve been known to play this one a couple times in a row.
    Joni Mitchell – River

The next one clocks in at over ten minutes, so one listen at a time is enough.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – The River

  2. This is the river song you want. I hope someone is still awake to listen to this. The late jazz bassist Charlie Haden singing with his family and friends including Pat Metheny. Let this song bless your Sunday night.
