Deadsplinter Up! All Night: Songbird

After all the chaos of Christmas stress & Wednesday Steel, I need to chill with some sweet island music.  Kimie Miner is a Grammy nominated singer from Hawaii with a beautiful voice.  Kimie got her big break while attending USD when she sang for Barrington Levy, he was so impressed he recruited her to be his opening act for part of his west coast tour. Her version of Songbird is a touching tribute to her family.

This song is so infectious with a fun reggae vibe.  Plus the backdrop of my childhood playground Koolau mountains doesn’t hurt to relax me…

She sings with so much heart and love it really shines through in her music.

Do you have a favorite songbird that gives you chills?  Or just takes you to that relaxing place in your mind?  Mahalo for your support of DUAN & Deadsplinter!

  1. Amy Helm has such a great voice.  Completely captures my attention.  I got to see her before anybody knew who she was, in a VERY small club in Nashville where she sat in on a few songs with her father, Levon.  It was one of those shows that you hear about but are so rare as to live more in the realm of urban legend:  where lots of A-list musicians are in attendance and all take a turn playing a tune or two with the band.

    Anyway, this is her with Ollabelle – Northern Star

  2. Many years ago I was in a used record store with a friend, we came across an LP called Voice of the Xtabay . The liner notes were full of bullshit about the singer being an Inca princess. We were stoned and found it hilarious, so I bought it for 50 cents. Turned out that in spite of the kitschy persona she had an amazing set of pipes. I ended up ordering more of her stuff from the local record store.

    • I used to listen to her a lot.  Then I lent someone my CDs, and they up and went to another country without returning them.  >:(
      I had been kinda “meh” on The Forgotten Arm (a bit of an overstatement, it was a fine album, it just didn’t measure up to Lost In Space, but that’s not a reasonable expectation…), and then I have an irrational hatred of Christmas Albums…  But I really like this album.  I need to re-acquire her CDs once covid ends…

  3. Arrrrrgh! I keep losing my reply, when I’m trying to grab the links!!🤪
    But your mention of “Songbird” sent me down an entire warren of rabbit-holes, trying to remember *who* had been the woman who recorded my favorite  version of “Blackbird”
    I ran across Martina, and Tanya, before I fiiiinally discovered it was Sarah Darling;

    And I’ll share the Martina & Tanya songs in replies to this one😉

    • Martina McBreakfast.. McBride‘s Broken Wing;

      I haven’t been able to think/hear Martina’s last name, without calling her “Martina McBreakfast” and giggling in well over a decade. One morning, YEARS ago, when I was driving to work, one of the local Country DJ’s–who was a NOTED breakfast aficionado😉–was apparently EXTRA hungry one morning, and when he was talking about Martina’s upcoming concert/tour/album, accidentally said “Martina McBreakfast” rather than “Martina McBride.” He was razzed mercilessly  by his female co-host, and I get a giggle every time I think of her name, since🤣💖

  4. I really like Mirah’s stuff.  First introduction was probably Story of Isaac fed to me on Pandora:

    But I like pretty much all of her stuff.  Here’s another one I’m rather fond of, Don’t Die in Me:

    She’s played quite a few small venues in my area, so I’ve been lucky enough to get to see her live a few times in the past several years, and she usually came out and signed stuff and was generally really nice.  Also, one of the shows I saw, Thao (of Thao & the Get Down Stay Down) was present, and Mirah called Thao up on stage, and they did some stuff from their collaborative album, it was really cool.
