DeadSplinter Up! All Night: That Sounds Different!

That's not who I thought it was...

Do you categorize musicians by genre or sound or style, so that you have an expectation of how their next offering will sound?

The newest EP by Benjamin Amaru does not sound like his past music. Compare his recent release, My Perception of Love, with a prior release, U-Ser-Name. I like both songs but wasn’t expecting a gentle, piano-based release from a fellow who often makes tongue-in-cheek indie-pop music.

  1. One of my favorite bands first album was Ozomatli.  It goes from hip hop funk/dance party…

to some sort of super fast Cumbia/salsa dance music…

every album seems to push different musical styles but when the did a pure reggae/dub album, it kind of blew me away…

  2. I like both of those @Elliecoo

I’ve given up trying to categorize the music I like. Whenever I think I’ve got someone figured out they throw me for a loop. Case in point, Black Lips. I’ve always liked their garage rock sound.

But I never saw this coming. Not a complete departure but still surprising. Good for them, I say.
