Deadsplinter Up! All Night: The King

King Khan is the hardest working Canadian/Indian man in music.  Go ahead and find me one that works harder or plays harder.  Since his rowdy beginnings in the Canadian garage band scene he has become somewhat of a legend for frantic shows, drunken raging and wild behavior.  In fact he got a bunch of attention for sticking his bare ass in the face of Lindsey Lohan while performing at the Cannes Festival with the Almighty Defenders.

Rumor has it that he was banned from KEXP for a while for a drunken belligerent performance he did though he has been back on several times since then (in fact, I saw the Shrines show courtesy of KEXP).  He created his own so called “death cult” known as the “Kukamongas” with all members having matching tattoos.  While in the Spaceshits, he called himself “Blacksnake”.  Besides hard partying and playing with a bunch of bands, he has scored soundtracks for a number of films.  He even started his own record label called Khannibalism  .  He has collaborated on a few other duos, including one with GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, one called the Black Jaspers and another called the Tandoori Knights.

Much of King Khan’s musical career has been shared with Mark Sultan, also known as BBQ.

My favorite of all his acts is King Khan and the Shrines, an amazing mix of soul, funk and punk with a little psychedelic  rock mixed in .

I saw King Khan & the Shrines, this day at Bumbershoot, they did a small indoor concert in the studio and then a big one outdoors.

King Khan & BQQ formed the Almighty Defenders as a sort of super group with members of the Black Lips.  They performed what I can only call punk gospel.

If you ever get a chance to see him in any of his bands or collaborations, just do it!  You will definitely not regret it (unless he sticks his ass in your face!)
