Deadsplinter Up! All Night: The Negro Problem

The other night I posted a song by Stew and the Negro Problem and it seemed to go over well so I want to make sure more people know about them.  Stew (real name Mark Stewart)  is an amazing singer-songwriter, playwright and musician.  Since ’95 he has been partnered with Heidi Rodewald and other band mates to form the Negro Problem.  In 2004, Stew and Heidi put the Negro Problem on hold and began writing a semi-autobiographical rock musical “Passing Strange”.  The play became a big hit off-Broadway and received much critical acclaim, including seven Tony nominations,  Stew won for “Best Book of a Musical”  and it caught the eye of Spike Lee.  The play closed in July of 2008 and Spike filmed the final performances for a feature film that screened at Sundance in 2009.  The movie actually got 100% on Rotten Tomatoes! https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1217083_passing_strange

The music of the Negro Problem is all over the place, from light hearted pop/rock to serious folk/protest songs to psychedelic rock.  I encourage everyone to check out the music and film.  If you don’t like one song, try another because they have something for almost everyone with some of the best lyrics of any bands ever.  Here’s a few of my favorites.

A song about Trump with video by Spike Lee, Klown Wit da Nuclear Code

A song about stereotypes, Black Men Ski

An amazing story of the Ken doll

A sad, ironic tale of drug addiction

I’ve used this song as my wake up alarm for several years, it is the perfect song to wake up relaxed, Bleed

A  little teaser of what to expect from Passing Strange

Thanks for your support of DUAN & addressing The Negro Problem.
