I came of age in the punk rock era. You know…Ramones, Cramps, like that. I didn’t really pay a lot of attention to disco, except at 4am on a Saturday night when the only clubs still open were gay bars and we’d pile into those places and we never felt like we didn’t belong. The punk clubs were not always as welcoming to the gay community. Anyway, years later I realize that while we punks thought we were being so transgressive, it was disco that was really breaking it down. Now that I’m old and my taste is shot all to hell, I can’t even hear genre any more. It all sounds good as long as it’s done with some heart and soul. A lot of the punk bands sound so dated and cynical, but songs like this Sylvester joint sound… mighty real.
I totally get this. I was too cool to see how cutting edge guys like Nile Rodgers were. And how much fun bands like ABBA could be. Getting older has some advantages.
