Hell of a day indeed…been waiting for a friend all day, could be waiting for me at airport since his phone died or MIA? Drugs are a hell of a thing! Might Mighty Bosstones – Where did you Go?
When Brian Wilson first heard The Beatles Rubber Soul record, it blew his mind. His retort was Pet Sounds, which is regarded by many as one of the greatest albums that popular music has ever known.
And then Smile would have been the Beach Boys’ Sgt. Pepper’s, but when Brian heard Sgt. Pepper’s he couldn’t finish Smile because he was so intimidated.
Good point, Jonee. And I believe The Beatles also wedged Revolver in between Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper’s. It was quite a rivalry for several years that I think made both bands better, although the stress definitely wasn’t good for Brian’s mental health.
No, the Smile debacle was the beginning of a rough period for Brian. But, the band was still great. They were no longer a match for the Beatles on the charts, though.

Better than the original.
