I’m reminded of this segment from Amber Ruffin (seriously, watch her show if you aren’t already). Radio station edits cut Left Eye’s rap (arguably the best part) from the track.
So far as Ten Fé and their cover go, I don’t necessarily love the overall phenomenon of white men covering Black women’s work and being celebrated for it. Even if they’ve done a good job, I still sort of grimace. Here’s another example:
The Whitest Boy Alive, “Show Me Love (Live)” Robin S Cover
I love this band, I like that this is a live show-only cover they do for a bit of fun and that they’ve updated the arrangements to suit them, but boy does it pale in comparison to the original Robin S. At least they haven’t released it and tried to blatantly capitalize off it, though? It’s difficult to not feel conflicted either way.
