DeadSplinter Up! All Night: Wrap Yourself in Petals for Armor

I haven’t talked too much about myself personally and I’m sure with our interactions on DUAN and email when we were looking for a new place for DUAN you all have an idea of who I am. This is something I never talked about in this space, but it relates to both my username and tonight’s music selection. In my 20’s, I massively struggled with Major Depressive Disorder, anxiety, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I’ve been able to learn to manage it without medication for almost 3 years now. But what does that have to do with Hayley Williams and Boop to the Face? The last two things I became obsessed with as I learned to cope without meds were playing Overwatch and listening to Paramore. I love Paramore. They debuted during my freshman year of college where I used to search for new bands, artists, and music on pop punk and punk adjacent websites. I knew every word to Emergency from their first album All We Know Is Falling. Even though I had been a fan for so long, I had never seen them live. Fast forward to 2017, I’m recently off medication and trying to distract my thoughts and I began to listen to Paramore again. The thing about OCD is as soon as you latch onto an intrusive thought, it stays and all the ifs, what ifs, should have, could have scenarios flood your brain. I became scared that Paramore would break up, I missed my opportunity to see them, and this idea greatly upset me. My brain screamed that I had to see them. They had toured in my area a few months before this realization came to me, but that no longer mattered. Wherever they would be next, I would be there too. I found out their tour was about to end that winter in Orlando. I had never been to Florida, the East Coast or the South before. After not being able to sleep, I compulsively bought a ticket to their show in Orlando and a plane ticket and December 2017, I finally saw Paramore live. I was about to have a panic attack realizing I was actually at the show, until the opening band played and the music calmed my nerves. To me, it was one of the most important shows of my life and because of the one time OCD did something that benefited me in someway, I now have a tradition of traveling out of state to see concerts. In 2018 it was Courtney Barnett and Julien Baker in Brooklyn, and later Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus in Denver that Thanksgiving. And as always, thank you for your continued support of DeadSplinter.

  1. i haven’t been privy to the duan emails, but i feel i have gotten to know more about some of you on deadsplinter more than i would have anywhere else and i am all for it!

  2. Boop- I’m glad you’re doing okay now. I also suffer from Depressive Disorder, a couple of years ago I spiraled down into a really serious bout. I don’t take meds either. I’m not judging anyone who does, it’s just not for me. Anyway here’s to the things that get us through. Like our friends IRL and online.

  3. Glad you are doing well, Boop!

Prior to tonight, here is what I knew, or thought I knew about Boop. He is an intelligent young guy with exquisite taste in music, but Boop is a bit shy and perhaps even a little introverted. The old DUAN could at times be just awful, because when Deadspin crossed into DUAN there were always a few hangers on who were there to rip everyone’s post to shreds and to try to embarrass them and make them feel inferior. These internet bullies have no idea how damaging their “fun” little trolling game can be to someone who already has insecurity issues.
So Boop, like many others, just enjoyed DUAN from afar so they would not be subjected to such harassment. Then one day Boop worked up the courage to post a song with a great write up and everyone loved it! Boop has been a regular since then and I am so glad as he is a terrific guy and a great contributor. I may be a bit off on some of this, Boop, but I believe you and I had a discussion a while back so I hope I’ve gotten a lot of it right. And now you are a DUAN writer! How far you have come, my friend.

So when this new and improved DUAN came along, myself and others talked to Myo about keeping DUAN a bully free zone. Myo could not have agreed more and we have such a nice community that we all enjoy and appreciate!

Whatever moves you is cool, right?

Here is one of my favorite SRV songs!

    • Thank you so much Luv. Yeah you have me pegged pretty well. Being part of this community and all you here make DUAN a special place and I’m happy I can contribute and discuss music with all you whenever I can.

    • if you, luv4, would look at last night’s duan, you will see that i mentioned your exact quote

“whatever moves you is cool remember?”

but you were asleep at the wheel?

i had an entire post ready, in my head, for monday’s duan…one that would get all of my hip hop out of me so i could TRY to live up to the duan community in future posts, but boop changed my game so monday’s duan might be a bit “extensive” to say the least…

there was always loveshaq and jonee, but there was only one person i knew that, when i didn’t follow the theme, when i woke up the next morning i’d have a star from. luv4allmusik. i, on kinja, followed and unfollowed you so many times because i didn’t know what your deal was that i almost feel badly for being stupid. getting to know you (somewhat) via pm’s is something i never imagined.

this is where duan belongs. this is a community.

and speaking of i-never-thought-possible, i get an awful lot of credit, undeserved, when the credit belongs to someone else…someone who i am too busy working on the backend to have our nightly discussions and who is too busy giving you the awesome daily threads…without whom none of us would be here and i perhaps need an offline life…Jake! aka SplinterRIP.

      • Yes, Myo, I am on the East Coast and sometimes I do fall asleep at the wheel but I usually try to check back the next day but I sometimes miss it.
And I know there are many others who make Deadsplinter happen and we are all appreciative, but to us, you are our DUAN guy, who supports us and who was insistent that we make this a safe place so that people like Boop (and let’s be honest, we all have our own insecurities) feel confident enough to host a DUAN and also to tell us more about himself. So thank you for all that you do!

You down with OPP…yeah you know me

Bring the hip-hop night my friend- can’t wait!

  4. Thanks for sharing Boop! I have felt like I’m falling into depression lately between politics, friends w/ cancer & getting close to my daughters leaving home. Being part of this group has been good therapy & music is always therapy. Tonight I’m going to go support my buddy’s band at a local brewery, this is them.

  5. Boop, thank you for your willingness to be real within this virtual community. Everyone here at DUAN on Deadsplinter has been kind and supportive to me (I am still new to posting). There is something very warm and special going on here. So Boop, and all y’all, I Adore You (Brolin).

  6. …so – although the band name might seem like I’m missing the point of the out of state pilgrimage thing, this one seems appropriate

…& because it’s apparently just difficult for me to avoid including a bit of sage in just about everything & because it sounds very much as though it might speak to the poor judgement of the original DUAN crowd if they failed to appreciate the likes of you, Boop

…keep ’em coming, if you’d be so kind…it would not be an exaggeration to say I am loving these threads & the breadth & depth of the musical knowledge you folks appear to have at your fingertips…meanwhile yours truly still hasn’t figured out who that schooldays tune from the other day was by

…so, I’ve said it before & I’ll no doubt have occasion to say it again, but…thank you, one & all

  7. ’m glad you’re OK Boop. Hang in there buddy.Tonight’s song is.a bit long but totally worth it IMHO.

James McMurtry – Choctaw Bingo (Live in Amsterdam):

    Lyrics:

    Strap them kids in
Give ’em a little bit of vodka in a cherry coke
We’re going to Oklahoma to the family reunion for the first time in years
It’s up at uncle Slayton’s cause he’s getting on in years
You know he no longer travels but he’s still pretty spry
He’s not much on talking and he’s just too mean to die
And they’ll be comin’ down from Kansas
    And from west Arkansas
It’ll be one great big old party like you never saw

Uncle Slayton’s got his Texan pride
Back in the thickets with his Asian bride
He’s got a Airstream trailer and a Holstein cow
He still makes whiskey ’cause he still knows how
He plats that Choctaw bingo every Friday night
You know he had to leave Texas but he won’t say why
He owns a quarter section up by Lake Eufala
Caught a great big ol’ blue cat on a driftin’ jug line
Sells his hardwood timber to the shipping mill
Cooks that crystal meth because the shine don’t sell
He cooks that crystal meth because the shine don’t sell
You know he likes his money he don’t mind the smell

My cousin Roscoe Slayton’s oldest boy from his second marriage up in Illinois
He was raised in East St. Louis by his momma’s people
    Where they do things different
Thought he’d just come on down
He was going to Dallas Texas in a semi truck called from that big McDonald’s
You know the one they built up on that great big ol’ bridge
    Across the Will Rogers Turnpike
Took the Big Cabin exit stopped and bought a couple of cartons of cigarettes
At that Indian Smoke Shop with the big neon smoke rings
In the Cherokee Nation hit Muskogee late that night
Somebody ran a stoplight at the Shawnee Bypass
Roscoe tried to miss ’em but he didn’t quite

Bob and Mae come up from little town
Way down by lake Texoma where he coaches football
They were two A champions now for two years running
But he says they won’t be this year no they won’t be this year
And he stopped off in Tushka at that “Pop’s Knife and Gun” place
Bought a SKS rifle and a couple a full cases of that steel core ammo
With the berdan primers from some East bloc nation that no longer needs ’em
And a Desert Eagle that’s one great big ol’ pistol
I mean .50 caliber made by bad ass Hebrews
And some surplus tracers for that old BAR of Slayton’s
Soon as it gets dark we’re gonna have us a time
We’re gonna have us a time

Ruth Ann and Lynn come down from Baxter Springs
That’s one hell raisin’ town way up in Southeastern Kansas
Got a biker bar next to the lingerie store
That’s got them Rolling Stones lips up there where everyone can see ’em
And they burn all night you know they burn all night you know they burn all night
Ruth Ann and Lynn they wear them cut off britches and those skinny little halters
And they’re second cousins to me
Man I don’t care I want to get between ’em
With a great big ol’ hard on like a old bois d’ arc fence post
You could hang a pipe rail gait from
Do some twisted sisters ’til the cows come home
And we’d be havin’ us a time

Uncle Slayton’s got his Texan pride
Back in the thickets with his Asian bride
He’s cut that corner pasture into acre lots’
    He sells ’em owner financed
Strictly to them that’s got no kind of credit ‘cCause he knows they’re slackers
    When they miss that payment
    Then he takes it back
He plays that Choctaw Bingo every Friday night
Drinks that Johnny Walker at that Club 69
We’re gonna strap them kids in give ’em a little bit o’ Benadryl
And a cherry coke we’re goin’ to Oklahoma Gonna have us a time

    • …it’s maybe not the USM’s best known (that’s most likely sheriff fatman or the only living boy in new cross) but I can’t see a reference to Johnny Walker without a voice in my head saying “Johnny drinks, Johnny drinks/Johnny drinks Johnny Walker/’til he runs up a bill he can’t pay”

  8. I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone on this site was depression-anxiety-prone, but I sure the hell am and I’m glad you are dealing with it. I use medication, with no shame what-so-fucking-ever.
