Decisions, decisions [NOT 16/5/24]

Hi, friends!

It’s Thursday night. We’re so close to the weekend. Almost there.

Do you have any decisions you’ve been mulling over lately? They don’t have to be important.

I’m not sure if I want to start making kombucha again. It’s not hard to make or anything like that, I would just need to get a new scoby. I got enough local cool folks that I could probably just ask in the local facebook group and get someone who could peel a layer off theirs. I’m needing to drink less diet soda, and I do enjoy the kombucha. Homemade doesn’t have the cool flavors I can buy at the store, but it’s still quite good. But also? I do enjoy iced tea and could just make more of that.

  1. Less a decision I’m mulling over and more “immediate Red Alert decision time”: my wife’s car died this week very much out of the blue. (Vaxxed?) So I’m several thousands of dollars lighter but we got a new one coming from Carvana early next week. I don’t love another bill but what are you going to do, rely on public transportation like some filthy European!??!

    • Ugh that’s frustrating. My favorite kind of car is paid off, I’m not looking forward to having to replace mine eventually.

      • Same. Six-year-old Hyundai, paid off, less than 15,000 miles. (Work from home, mostly a hermit.)

        • 😂 glad I’m not the only one. I’ve got a ten year old Kia with less than 25k miles on it. I don’t drive more than a couple miles a day.

    • I just need my 18 year old car with over 240,000 miles to last five more years and I’ll be able to buy the next one with cash.

  2. I have a big decision coming up. I’m getting an MRI done at the end of the month for the partially dislocated hip. Turn out I was born with bilateral hip dysplasia. I injured my hip two years ago and it has deteriorated significantly this past month. Will I tough it out and continue to live with reduced mobility and pain for a few more years relying solely on PT and exercise to keep it together or opt for a periacetabular osteotomy and hopefully rehab won’t be as long and arduous as I imagine? I have three kids under 6 and no “village”. Though my husband is amazing and can solo-parent, he can’t take that much time off work. So the answer is not as obvious to me right now. If we had no kids, I’d get the surgery asap.

    • That sounds painful and a tough choice. I hope you have a doctor who is good with not just the technical issues but can talk about the bigger picture issues around what options there are.

When my wife had major ankle surgery a couple of years ago, her surgeon was about to get his own hip replaced, and he was a good source for some of the nonmedical, general lifestyle issues to think about.

    • I’m gonna ask the bad question, I’m sorry for being uncouth.

Is there still a chance that you’ll end up needing a hip replacement and is it better to just wait a few years and do that?

      • That’s a possibility. After my MRI, I’ll go through all the game plans with my surgeon. I have an appointment scheduled in September for a second opinion with a surgeon that I biasedly feel more comfortable with because she’s a woman… even though I haven’t met her yet. We’ll see if I can wait that long.

        • I have a friend that is one of the best physical therapists in the state but might be a little far for you.  Message me if you want a link.  She is way better than any of the big groups.

    • @hammerzeitgeist, I’m so sorry to hear of this. Chronic pain, full life, the medical-industrial complex . . . it is all a lot. Hugs.

  3. Decision already made. Gotta do work on my parents house as there is water damage on the floor boards from a leaking toilet. Dad neglected the house for several years but now is the time to end the dithering or it gets worse.

Got a contractor lined up and now setting up the timeline.

At least this time mom and dad won’t/can’t freak out about replacing the tiles.

2nd stage will be upgrading the upstairs bathrooms.

Has to be done to make the house liveable again.

  4. I have a US dollar bill that I saved – intentionally – when I quit my career (although I went back twice and bailed in Canada since then, but it has been nine years) because I made a promise to myself that it would be the last one I ever earned…

    …that’s a whole $1.36 CAD!

…yet I wake up every morning thinking how much easier my life would be if I were to just… sell my soul to the devil like any true American would – and does – and sit on a board, contributing as little as possible in order to play the long game. What I could actually accomplish in months would rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash while slithering with serpents on the taxpayer’s dime.

I wish there were more people like me while, at the same time, struggling to forgive myself for things I did before wishing this.

I’d consider myself a martyr, but, in all honesty, I really don’t want to go back down there and get shot.

What were we talking about again?

  5. Hey wait a second. C78153301C?

That disappeared from my wallet nine years ago. How did you get that?

    • Fucking Canadians, not trustworthy. Stole your dollar! What else did they steal???

    • And that stain, sorry, that was me.  But any coke residue was definitely a Canadian, us Americans only use $20’s like god intended.

      • Everyone knows the 403/401 in Ontario is basically the coke and meth pipeline of Canada.

  6. i have 5 years to decide if i want to stay british or take on the dutch nationality

brexit is a huge pain in the arse…and i dont see them reversing course any time soon…

but on the other hand…changing my nationality is surprisingly pricey….and with the current gubment…im not so sure i want to be affiliated….

any chance of a moon colony happening in the next 5 years?

being a lunatic is sounding better by the day

    • @Farscythe, so you cannot be/remain a dual citizen? I suspect you would prefer to keep your options open.

      • @elliecoo nope…brittain expects me to renounce my british citizenship if i apply for a dutch one

unless i marry someone dutch…then its okay
