Do you prefer to cook in this weather? Or do you just like to make simple foods that require not much heat? Or is it one of the many many takeout joints, fast food places, or an app?
I remember as a kid that mom decided she had enough of this weather and would be laying out the cold cuts, peanut butter, bread, crackers, cheez whiz, cold salad (3 beans, watermelon and/or fruit) cold rice, and fresh fruit for dinner. My dad wasn’t all that happy, but he didn’t spring for an AC (too cheap because it was only hot and miserable 2 weeks out of the year where we lived and he felt having one “made us weak.”)
Food bonus: One of the seasonal things mom made that proved to be popular for the summer especially as she grew lots and lots of cucumbers for pickling:
A word of advice: Korean brine shrimp is pretty much the saltiest thing you’d ever have, but any kind of fish sauce is a better choice for those afraid of their rising blood pressure.
I’m really fond of cold salads tossed with a super basic dressing – for example some vinegar or even mixed with a dollop of sour cream.
It’s also because August and September are my “holy fuck I gotta use up all these veggies OMG” season thanks to the garden. I’m getting a ton of green beans, tomatoes, and sweet peppers plus the basil and parsley are doing ridiculously well. So it’s often just chopping up whatever I got plus whatever I got at the farmers market and filling a big bowl.
Usually I’ll make a carb to toss into the cold salad to help it be more filling. Brown rice and quinoa are the most common ones, although if it’s more Mediterranean in flavor, pasta is also a great addition.
Related note – if you’re lazy and like cilantro, see if your local farmers market has a sprout person and if they’re selling cilantro sprouts. No chopping etc needed, softer flavor than full-size cilantro. Sunflower sprouts have a nutty flavor and are closer in size to mung bean sprouts (unlike cilantro sprouts which are closer to alfalfa sprouts in size).
Oh man that cucumber kimchi looks good.
How spicy is that Korean pepper powder? I have to take into consideration other people in the household.
“Just add a dollop of yogurt” – me to friends who are used to bland food
You can add as much as you want which could be very little. My mom didn’t load up on the heat at all.
ive lived off salad sandwiches for like a month now coz its too damn warm too cook……….by wich i mean we are now in the high 70s…..occasionally low 80s….
lol
i need to move to the north pole or some shit……..
global warmings gonna be the death of me
but on the upside….i now get to wear shorts like 10 months a year
I’ve mentioned it previously, but cold noodles plus protein and veg.
Instant pot wins in hot weather.
