DU!AN: Friday Night Crossover

I am breaking format slightly tonight, because some hero has posted the Allman Brothers’ infamous “Zakk Goes Wylde” concert, and I positively had to share. In August ’93 Dickey Betts found himself in jail on an assault charge, and the nearest available replacement was Zakk Wylde. To hear Zakk tell it, he was simply enthralled to be onstage with his heroes, and let himself get carried away. Gregg was mortified with Zakk’s running amok, climbing on the monitors, and spewing beer everywhere, and at one point exasperatedly commented, “He’s not getting paid by the note!” Butch Trucks asked Zakk to take it down a notch, to which Zakk replied, “But it’s my favorite band!!” I saw them a couple of nights later at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland, by which time they had picked up some scrub from John Mellencamp’s band who was copping licks straight off the Fillmore East record. Oh, to have seen this glorious mess instead. I was giddy with anticipation waiting for Zakk’s first solo, and it did not disappoint. I think he even inspired Warren Haynes to cut loose a little. Enjoy.
