Excessive [NOT 1/2/24]

Hi, friends!

Last year I worked really hard to clean up my email account. I had 15k+ emails in there, and a lot of it was really due to advertising emails. So I used the unsubscribe option ruthlessly, keeping only a few stores that I liked shopping with and who only sent emails once or twice a week.

Anyways, recently I noticed the email getting craycray again. Turns out the biggest offender was groupon, which is sending me about 5 emails a day!

You got any emails or commercials or coworkers etc where you feel like it’s excessive contact attempts?

  1. Like you, I’ve been ruthlessly unsubscribing. I’m not enticed by “act now” deals and only buy what I need when I need it (and there is always a deal/ sale somewhere; plus I have become a savvy internet shopper.)

  2. I recently hit a brief wave of spam that seems to have disappeared just as quickly. I’m not sure what happened (waves vaguely) out there, but I’m back to a dozen or so deletions daily.

  3. I get so much spam from retailers & political stuff that I spend a few hours a week deleting stuff.

Today in flooring woes, we ripped out the laundry room & found a small hole in sub floor.  It started smelling like gas from the hole.  When the idiots ran gas lines in my 2015 remodel, they didn’t do the gas lines right & it has been leaking since then!  I got a gas guy over today but he can’t fix it til next Thursday!!!!

    • Is there a shutoff valve for that? Or do you have to kill all of the gas for the house?

      • It’s a very slow leak & I would have to shutdown all gas so leaving a few windows open & gas flowing.  If you don’t see me posting again, that was a bad choice

        • Do you have a dog you can blame the smell on?

          • My wife is gone til Saturday so just me.  Dog died during Covid year. Hopefully wife still comes back after I told her today.  She caught a big Mahi Mahi today in Mexico & asking for cooking instructions while taunting me with pics.

  4. I get my share of political solicitations and push-module news articles on the e-mail address that I hardly use — which is also the one connected to this site, although I try to respond to messages and mentions a bit sooner if they come from here.

As for my main account, a couple of years ago, I was getting literally dozens of malignant spam and phishing-bait e-mails a day, and my spam filter just seemed to throw up its hands and let everything through no matter how many e-mail addresses, domains or specifically rendered phrases I told it to block. One day, though, I don’t know if some IT worker in India happened to write a new bit of code or something, but it finally woke up and decided to carry out its duty. My spam folder typically has those dozens now, but I hardly get anything trying to pass through.

These days, I tend to get a lot of e-mails associated with my . . . side hustle, as the kids today would call it, and they can really pile up and be rendered unactionable if I don’t get to them in time. But the outfit behind them has netted me a good chunk of cash over the past few months and even wants to interview me as a member of their community, which maybe I’ll explain in person someday.

  5. Groupon! That’s something I haven’t heard in a decade, at least. We used to have a neighbor who was a huge fan and was constantly inviting a small group of us to restaurants and things with a Groupon code. I think she might have gotten free stuff if she got enough people to take advantage of the offers. We used to shy away from this stuff but we once went to an excellent omakase restaurant and another time to a Neapolitan pizzeria that had just opened and was incredible and earned a Michelin star.

I didn’t realize Groupon was still around.

    • A friend of ours recently got a coupon through the mail for a pizza place, which is evidently still a marketing thing.

We all went out to a place that we hadn’t been before and it was good. We may go back before long. The old methods may actually still work.

  6. huh…..my junk mail account actually has fewer unread emails than my official one now

    a measly 2000 some…..vs nearly 4 k in my professional account

    …..

    anyways…call me if its important

    • oh but to answer the question….. the worst offenders are job agencies…once they have your email they are relentless (and apparently nothing short of blocking their emails stops them)

for some reason my optician is pretty spammy too….

just how many new glasses do you think i need in a month?
