  1. NewsMax kismet. I was just reading this morning that due to surging viewership Florida-based (no doubt for tax reasons) NewsMax will be doubling its amount of Manhattan office space. If you want to pay them a visit, they’re at 805 Third Avenue, between E. 49 and E. 50th. Or at least that’s where the main entrance is. I know that building and it’s quite large. It is also known as “The Crystal Pavilion,” and is emblematic of its time, having opened in 1982, when you could name a slapped together glass box “The Crystal Pavilion” without smirking.

  2. The Murdaugh family murders are Southern gothic at it’s finest. Not only did the housekeeper die mysteriously falling down some stairs. A gay teenage boy was found dead by a supposed “hit and run” on the road near the house a couple of years ago. As well as the poor girl killed in the boating accident. If you can’t tell – I’ve been following this whole story on Reddit.

  3. Oh – and fuck the FBI. Those girls shouldn’t have had to go through all of that. Wray needs to be fired immediately. I’ve seen people floating around Sally Yeats to get the job.

    Two of the most inept organizations in Fair Gotham, the MTA (which is a state entity and runs the subways and buses) and the Department of Education (theoretically under Mayoral control but excuse me while I stifle my laughter with de Blasio running out the clock on his disastrous administration) have created a perfect storm.

    Schoolkids get transit passes. Either the MTA didn’t provide them or the DoE didn’t distribute them. Probably a lot of both. So, students are advised to jump turnstiles or crawl under them if they’re small enough.

    This is probably good training though. Little is what it seems in New York, so we all become canny adapters over time. I think we have a reputation for being ruthlessly cynical and if that’s true it’s well-earned.

    I hope the trees and creatures in the Avenue of the Giants will be OK. 
     
    Related to the US Gymnasts testifying before Congress, it’s a reminder that all the people critical of Simone Biles during the Olympics just have no idea the pressure she was under. Clearly, while she was competing she knew this appearance was in the works and, as the only person testifying this week who was still competing on the US Team during Tokyo, this was one of several things weighing on her mind at the time. She mentions she felt the pressure to serve as the bridge into a new post-Nasser era of USA Gymnastics during Tokyo and that, due to COVID protocols, she was unable to have her family accompany her to Tokyo for support. She handled everything remarkably well, given the circumstances.
