First things first: My mother used to make cinnamon buns when I was a kid. I could never wait long enough for them to cool properly so I invariably wound up eating something that was closer to napalm when I took a bite. They took her hours and hours to make because she did the dough from scratch. This is not that recipe. For some reason, my grandmother figured that using frozen bread dough was a much easier approach.
A caveat before we get started: I didn’t use the entire ½ cup of butter. I held back the two tablespoons in the beginning and melted the rest, but I could only slap so much of it on the dough. So I just saved what I no longer had space for on the dough, and used it to brush on the buns the next day before baking.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1 Loaf Frozen Bread Dough, thawed
½ Cup Butter, melted
½ Cup Sugar
2 tsp. Cinnamon
Roll thawed dough into a 14×8 inch rectangle. Reserve two tablespoons of butter for later and brush remaining butter over the dough. Combine sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over dough.

Starting at 14-inch side, roll up dough in jelly roll style. Cut into 12 rolls.

Arrange in a greased 9-inch pan. Allow to rise in refrigerator overnight. Before baking, brush with remaining two tablespoons of butter.

Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for about 30 minutes. Allow to cool for 10 minutes. Drizzle with powdered sugar glaze. Recipe doubles nicely using a 9×15 pan.

These are pretty good, but there’s no way I’m making them again. In order to get one loaf of frozen bread dough, I had to buy a package of SIX. That’s bullshit.
What will you do with the other five loaves?
Fed the guests at the wedding of Cana.
I just baked them as actual bread loaves.
I freaking love cinnamon buns. Even the bad ones are good.
These look fantastic.
Oh god.
Someone is trying to kill us!
You just now noticed? You, my friend, have not been paying attention.
That doesn’t even begin to—
I can totally relate to experiencing the napalm of fresh cinnamon rolls. The decadent smell of fresh cinnamon rolls always overrides the cautionary memory of peeling my palate 😅 …see also anything with cheese from the oven (pizza, french onion soup, baked brie, etc.).
I hear you, sis. Last night I made Croque Monsieurs. I was starving and I almost lost my upper palate eating mine straight from the grill pan. I survived, though, to comment another day.
Sigh . . .
Oh I love cinnamon rolls but could not be trusted to bake them myself.
As in I guarantee there will be ZERO portion control or volume management and I’ll happily eat myself into a diabetic coma on them.
That’s a problem…why, exactly?
We have a breakfast restaurant not too far away that you have to fight the old people to get into but if you do, they have a 2lb cinnamon roll that is to die for (and you probably will)
