Today’s theme is things you see and don’t understand why that choice was made.
For example, I work in an office building and today was yet another woman having a conversation on her cell phone in the bathroom. Like just standing by the sinks, chatting away.
I genuinely don’t understand it. We have conference rooms, huddle rooms, and always a few empty offices. Just go have your private conversation there! Whomever she was talking to definitely heard my flush and hand-washing.
Yeah, I’ve heard guys mid-call in the men’s restroom and I always wonder WTF is up with that? It’s gotta be obvious where you are when you’re on that call!

Every once in while I can see why people call, like you’re lonely for the sound of someone’s voice. I really don’t get why so many public phone conversations I hear aren’t texts, though.
Especially when the next stall neighbor (me) flushes the toilet.

Talking with your phone on speaker phone in the grocery store annoys the crap out of me! Bad enough I have to hear your side! At my local store, the Russians, Ukrainians, & Hispanics seem to be the worst offenders. Maybe because they think people won’t understand the convo? Does it have to be at full blast too? Can you have your kids at least not touch all the produce while you finish your conversation? I don’t mean to interrupt your important call but can you at least get the fuck out of the center of the aisle?
It’s mostly a 50-70 age group by me that does the speakerphone conversation in public.
Ours seems to be 30-50 range, usually women with multiple kids from toddler to teen.
I’ve seen much younger do it here. The older crowd literally Facetimes all the time. The younger ones wander around with their phones held horizontally in front of their faces. I don’t understand it. You look like an idiot.

Motorcycles. Yesterday I went past another mangled motorcycle with a blood trail that picked up 20 feet beyond the wreckage. There’s little chance the rider survived, though I haven’t seen a news report on it yet.
Motorcycles are, to me, the stupidest fucking vehicle you could possibly own. It’s 106 degrees here, and you’re sitting on a saddle in the blazing hot sun wearing heavy clothes (if you’re smart but really that shit won’t save you). You’re stuck at stoplights (where this dude had his accident) and you’re basically sitting in an Easy-Bake Oven on top of a broiler. And somehow this is … nice? And for your trouble you get maimed or dead (Bike Week every year is a non-stop funeral procession).
And don’t tell me about the colder climates. You’re just swapping wind chill for desert heat. It’s unimaginable to me that people will risk life and limb on these things.
I mean, if there’s some redeeming factor, educate me. But I’m staying inside my fucking car with my AC and satellite radio.
The only positive I see is that it’s usually culling the MAGA herd.
Memories of a bygone era I suspect. Seen a couple of horrible cycle crashes that I didn’t want to ever drive one.
I’ve had fun riding dirt bikes but would never own a street bike! I always tell people thinking about getting one, you can be the best rider in the world but cars don’t respect bikes. In Hawaii, they have no helmet law & many riders wear slippers & don’t wear a shirt or anything that would protect you in the least. The guy I have been working with lost his grandson because he drove recklessly & a car was doing the same. On the way to the funeral, his biker friends recklessly flew by us. Really assholes? He was early 20s.
And don’t get me started on CA where you can fly between stopped cars in traffic @ stupid speeds! WTF is that all about?
You can’t legally do that in Missouri, but that never stops motorcyclists.
They JUST passed a lane-splitting law here!!!
Riders aren’t *supposed* to do it, if traffic is moving at more than 25mph, iirc, but as an ADHDer, who loses TRUCKS in blind spots, because of my height, and who sometimes *obsessively* checks her mirrors, this one has me *twitchy*!
I think it’s even nuttier where you get unexpected cloudbursts that turn roads into a mix of oil and water, and the drivers all around go haywire.
I have a few coworkers who love riding their motorcycles, but they’re also the kind of dudes that do other reckless things so at least it’s consistent?
But Dude. The FREEDOM.
Doing maintenance during regular working hours. Too many times I’ve seen it recently. We’ve had less and less OT lately and maintenance still does it.
I can’t imagine the trust level required to ride behind someone on a motorcycle. Zero control, limited vision, and at the mercy of the driver’s bad decisions. I’ve never understood the romance novel trope of the thrill of riding with the bad boy on his motorcycle.
For *me*, lately, it’s gotta be City Road Construction *Choices*🙄😬😖😱
The schools in the district that I work for are built on the “Neighborhood Schools” model. They’re tucked back into residential areas, OFF the “Main Roads,” ever since the 1950’s/60’s–with the idea that “local kids will attend, and they’ll *walk* to school!”
It’s honestly pretty nice, the schools are small-ish, the fact that they HAVE a playground means that *most* kids have a safe outdoor place to play, within blocks of their home, etc.
BUT, for the last couple years, *SOME DUMBASSES* in the City Planning Department of *MULTIPLE* cities our district operates in *apparently* never bother calling to see *WHEN* classes get out for summer?
Because we then have MAJOR re-routes scheduled to start the last TWO WEEKS of the school year🙃🫠
At *my* Preschool building, the city DID actually get SMART, and decided to postpone construction until next Monday… it was supposed to begin May 20th, and had they not changed it–the school buses (who ALL have other routes before *and* after they pick up/drop off OUR kids!), would’ve alllll had to drive in an approximately 5-mile long *ONE WAY* Loop, to get to our school.
No left turns, because the road was/will be just ONE LANE, going in that *one* direction🫠
Luckily, the weekend before construction started, SOMEONE fiiiiinally got a clue, and realized we still are in session until the end of *this* week–so they postponed until we’re out.
But this is the same city which postponed at least *TWO* of the 6 other years I’ve worked for the district (all at this building!)🙄🙄🙄
The other city–where the before & after school program is (and where I’m at this summer!), ripped up both directions–three lanes each way, starting LAST TUESDAY🙃🫠
There are 5 schools *JUST* off of the section they ripped up…
Couldn’t wait *EIGHT* more work days, apparently! They *had* to start then…
So now we go from *THREE* lanes of “through traffic” *and* two turn lanes, to ONE lane of through traffic, and those two turn lanes—which *now* sometimes have dumbasses *trying* to go straight, rather than turning, because the lane changes confuse people🙃🙃🙃
WHY, y’all?!?!???
Why not wait *EIGHT DAYS*, so that TONS of traffic will be DONE until fall, before you shift the lanes & rip up the road?!?
MRI results are in. It confirmed a hip labral tear. My journey to recovery looks like PT for six weeks and hopefully that eases the pain and discomfort. There are three surgical options if PT doesn’t help enough. None of them are great options. An osteotomy would have helped ten years ago to prevent the wear and the literal tear. Repairing the labrum doesn’t guarantee that it won’t tear again. My bones are too healthy to justify a hip replacement right now.
My surgeon and I hope PT will be enough. I also just started shiatsu therapy because after my first PT session on Friday, I pulled my neck and both shoulders and had a fucking miserable weekend. I’m hunting for a different PT now.
If you don’t see me around here as often, it’s because I’m busy chasing after my kids while stuck in first gear and swearing like a sailor (under my breath… for the most part).
Oh, I am so sorry to hear about that. I have found that physical therapy is the best bargain in all of medicine. But it doesn’t ease the pain right away. It might even feel like it’s getting worse at times, but you have to stick to it and follow the therapist’s instructions exactly. It’s hard goddamn work, but it is really effective if you do it.
I wish you well, my friend. I’ve had meniscus tears and rotator cuff tears and I still send my physical therapist christmas cards because he was a lifesaver.

Thanks @elliecoo ! I have one more appointment scheduled with them for tomorrow (too late to cancel). I’m going to insist that they pay better attention to my whole body while I’m doing the exercises, instead of just staring at their laptop while I go through the sets.
ETA how are you faring these days?
@HammerZeitgeist, better! I am four weeks out of surgery and getting some energy back, finally. The surgeon said eight weeks to be back to normal, and I scoffed at that, but I suspect that she knew her stuff . . . Thank you for asking😀.
I don’t care. If I had a regular job and could work from home I’d have a land line installed in my bathroom so I could take all my calls from the john. I’d even have a Zoom setup installed and use a custom backdrop of a much nicer bathroom.
The phone thing doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is the current trend of installing side-by-side sinks in master bathrooms. What’s that about? I really don’t want my significant other seeing the funny faces I make when I shave or brush my teeth.
But the phone thing…yeah, I can see that.
When we bought our home it had the original bathroom from the 80’s. Salmon pink tiles on the floor and walls, gold trim and white fixtures. The best part was the long corded phone hanging from the wall by the toilet. Single sink despite the five foot long countertop space. You would have loved it!
@loveshaq how was the atmospheric river by you? It was crazy here. A tree in the ravine was blown over onto my neighbor’s garage. Luckily no one was injured and its fall was softened by a second tree so the garage didn’t suffer too much damage. When I heard the crack, I grabbed my kids and ran out of the house while shouting for my husband to do the same because there’s a big tree in the ravine that would crush our home if it were to fall… and according to an arborist that was hired by the lot owners it is not in good shape. We’re still waiting to hear when they will be cutting it down.
We are in the convergence zone so sometimes get the worst but sometimes get the best. We have had lots of high winds but rain has been pretty mellow & no fallen trees yet. Just lots of crap on the deck from the giant pines. Good luck on your recovery! Good sign you have a good surgeon if he pushes PT first. Majority of surgeons want to cut first & ask questions later!

I see people driving around with their phones on their ears, or in speaker call mode where they hold it flat in front of their face, when they are driving newer luxury vehicles that would absolutely have hands-free Bluetooth capability. WTF?
I know early versions of this tech could be a bit difficult to set up, but that’s not true in the last several years. BT technology in cars is now 20 years old. Why the hell aren’t people using it?
