  3. The shingles vaccine was the toughest one for me.  It took two days to get back to normal.  Covid and flu shots barely bothered me.

    Other than that, I’ve got absolutely nothing.

    • The 1st shingles shot just left a big, angry red patch on my arm, but didn’t really bother me otherwise.  After the 2nd COVID shot I went home and hit the couch and had the shivers until 2am.

      …I’m a sucker for the monkey king/journey to the west stuff…& it looks slicker than some of the reviews said it played for some people…every so often though my efforts to not develop a gaming habit get tested by these things…& now you give me squirrels w/guns?

      …obviously the opposite in some ways but also similar in the sense of being mostly not a main-narrative sort of a character that’s been used in lots of one-offs to do things like kick the ass of all sorts of massive villains like thanos or dr doom

      …for someone that isn’t a terrier it’s possible I’m overly susceptible to things with squirrels…I blame this guy?

      • black myth is one of those games that looks really good to me….but i know i wont stick with for very long (i mean…asides from my current pc probably exploding if i try to run it)…ill get stuck on a puzzle or frustrated things are taking too long…..

        since having a massive gaming burnout that made me quit games altogether for a few years ive really struggled getting back into bigly serious games…

        anyways…given how all things superhero are getting a movie or game nowadays squirrel girl getting one is only a matter of time :p

        and i did always enjoy secret squirrel

        (huh…typed in squirell girl game in youtube for shits and giggles…..seems shes already in quite a few games but doesnt have one of her own yet)

        • …if she hasn’t got her own yet I might be safe for a while…think I may have been drafted once or twice to play a lego marvel game in which you could play as squirrel girl…but I wasn’t the boss of that so I think I was told I preferred to be someone else…probably someone who could fly since I’m not possessed of inate ablities honed through the traditional 10,000 hours & that way they didn’t have to wait for me to catch up?

          …if it’s susceptible to button mashing in a tekken kinda way, though…I can maybe punch a smidge above my weight…I know that annoyed some folks when we were students who took that sort of thing a touch more seriously than seemed advisable…I didn’t deliberately take the piss but senses of humor were known to fail on occasion…one kid actually broke a controller throwing it away when I won a game…nobody told me he had a favorite character & had been not using that one because he’d “be unbeatable”…& I was very clear that I claimed no bragging rights for ever winning since I didn’t know what buttons I was pressing or in what sequence so exactly none of it was deliberate…remember being quite taken aback by how extremely badly that went down that time

          …I have, however, watched a truly unfathomable number of hours of other people making games do things I probably couldn’t if I tried…in both active & passive spectator roles…so I nearly understand watching streams of other people playing through things…seems like without being in the same room & having snacks & being able to talk about other shit at the same time it wouldn’t feel as recreational to me…but probably a bunch of people would say that about being in the room, too

          …as to the burnout thing…from what I hear some sorts of aimed-at-grown-ups games have got a little out over their skis maybe when it comes to things that make it hard/gruelling/poorly suited to evening entertainment on a worknight…not everyone wants to pull all-nighters or spend all weekend at this stuff but “casual” & “top tier” don’t apply to the same game at the same time the way it seems like they used to more often?

          • eh tbh the burnout thing likely wasnt entirely gamings fault… was just a final straw…already having a bad day…and the game was also pissing me off but…kept going anyways coz..ill have a good game any moment now… nope… something just snapped…put the controller down…and didnt touch it again for a good few years

            but you know…that was all just after moving here and cutting ties with damn near all of my past life…and around about the time i kinda lost interest in all of my hobbies and sorta ended up just working and drinking and sleeping

            you know..in hindsight…i think i was probably just depressed as fuck…. took a real long time to get out of that hole

              …& happy you did…it’s like those incident pit things scuba divers & people talk about…it gets deeper as the sides get steeper even if it feels like you’re drifting in space & nothing’s changing

                  …most of the time it’s oddly quite difficult to upset me…think it might be because my baseline is broken by so very many things about the world upsetting me that it’s the only way I ever get anything done…so some of those people also like to use me a sounding board for a variety of styles of what some call venting…& others think of as ranting

                  …imagine myo would prefer that sort of thing in the PMs rather than on a thread…but…like the rat pack said…I’m for whatever it takes to get you through the night…or the long dark teatime of the soul, as the case may be?

        i got temporarilly adopted by a bunch of stoners with an n64 whilst i was there…one of them always called me the norweege….lol

  9. …actually watched that rebel ridge thing just the other day, as it happens…it’s not the deerhunter or anything…but if you think of it as a riff on that first rambo movie I think it makes a pretty good accounting of itself even if it’s a bit hokey in a couple of places…it sets out its pieces pretty well & the execution isn’t too shabby so the parts that are a little forced or trite aren’t as bad as they can be in that sort of fare?

    …be interested what anyone else might render as a verdict on it but I wouldn’t warn anyone off…does what it says on the tin & all that sort of thing

    • I saw it and really liked it. I’ve seen the Rambo reference but it’s really it’s own thing, and I appreciated the one big intentional difference in approaches which I won’t spoil. Aaron Pierre in the lead was great, and so was Don Johnson.

      The same director did Green Room with Patrick Stewart as the villain and yikes that was a movie I liked but don’t think I ever want to see again.

      • …the first rambo movie I think fits pretty well as a template if you just think of the stuff that’s in the trailer/premise – small town prejudice tries to run roughshod over a guy whose military record they dismiss in line with said prejudice…vet sets some boundaries…hijinks ensue…rinse & repeat a few times & before the credits roll you can be pretty sure it’s not his ass that’s in a sling…& in terms of the stuff that’s different I think you could argue some decent parallels in terms of what might be said to be the social commentary angle underneath all the 80s &/or steroids in that one & the stance they went with for the rebel ridge thing

        …very much riff rather than re-tread, though…& on that first one rather than the parody of itself the character/franchise became & made hot shots possible…wasn’t trying to imply the parallels were spoiler-level…at least…I hope the comparison wouldn’t work that way?

        • For a great movie about a lone veteran out for justice in a corrupt small town, Bad Day at Black Rock with Spencer Tracy (1955) is worth watching.

          It’s one of the early efforts to walk back from the simple John Wayne image of the US in WW2.

            • …I could think of a few other westerns…some funny ones & some not…there’s quite a few I think are pretty good one way or another…but some of them are…not fun?

              …like, the searchers is a pretty good film…but whether you consider it as an artifact of its time or of the period it depicts or you just freewheel that side of things & take it on its own terms…that whole story is brutal?

            …technically I think it’s a prequel to the carpetbaggers…which is the earlier movie that doesn’t have steve mcqueen in it…but it’s got in some senses a lot of the ingredients in rambo, too

            …if you squint right then the military background of the rambo figure is mostly just for the out-bully-the-bully stuff once the worm turns & the boot is on the other throat…& the backstory is a wayward youth who could have come to a bad end taken under the wing of someone who trains them to be able to counter “any” threat or violence…but who presents as a member of a counterculture underclass

            …admittedly that’s a lot to hang on a shaggy haircut on a vagrant character wearing a military surplus jacket…but in terms of how the sheriff/town view him it’s not so far off mcqueen’s half-indian orphan…& adjusted for time-period/genre being taken pity on by an itinerant gunsmith in the old west isn’t so different from an “irregular” outfit like rambo’s mentor in that it translates to “more than usually adept” at/with things that it’s better to be at one end of than the other

            …guess I normally think of the rambo/stranger-with-no-name style of protagonist as the “ronin” type…& if you go way east there’s some good ones that run along some pretty parallel tracks, too

                …but…it’s a bit like saying the old monkey magic tv show had martial arts…it’s true…but it’s not yuen woo-ping  choreography & I’m sort of spoiled that way these days?

                …iirc he’s only got one arm, though…so sanjuro probably isn’t the best comparison…there’s a bunch of one-armed swordsman flicks to choose from

                …pretty sure they were already making wong fei-hung stuff in the 50s…but I dont know the first one-armed swordsman thing off the top of my head?

                …looks like ’67 for the movie…with a one-armed boxer one in ’72…& wong fei-hung did make it onto film in the 50s…but it turns out the one credited with being the first kung fu flick was the adventures of fong sai-yuk in ’38…I’ve seen some old stuff but I don’t think I’ve been back that far

  10. …oh…&…I overlooked the part where the trump thing where jeremy strong plays roy cohn was a canal+ production…because it we’re playing by french rules rather than the hollywood studio book…that might be a different proposition…& if the title card that showed up at one point billing it as “a supervillain origin story” is anything to go by

    …no offense to sebastian stan…who I liked as the winter soldier…who is right on the line between superhero & supervillain depending on which way the arc is swinging in the character timeline…& I like plenty as a character, even…but…if we’re doing supervillains the draw for me isn’t little-boy-donnie becomes the up & coming supervillain of our times…it’s roy cohn in the…r’as al ghul (I guess?) role…the master in the training montage
