I was going to try to find an underground bunker for us to squirrel away for the next four years. There is a lot of companies willing to build you your own personal bunker. You can also buy shares in various shelters. All this did was completely bum me out about the state of our world. So please enjoy the following clips I stumbled upon during my searches.

To be blunt, a hole in the ground sounds great but there’s always problems.
Concrete absorbs oxygen, especially bare concrete.
HVAC systems will break down, humidity and mold are always a problem (see ISS)
Your neighbors are assholes always trying to bust in to rape, pillage or take over.

The Mount Dora Catacombs are about 40 miles from here, though the location is more or less secret. It was once the biggest subterranean bomb shelter in the country, designed to hold about 100 rich people from Mount Dora (exclusive town in central Florida). It’s been abandoned and left to rot, and a lot of the problems you mentioned cropped up.

I don’t think bunkers are the way to go long term. They may get you through the initial dangers and chaos of societal collapse. After which we live like nomads for maybe a decade. Then once enough people have died off, we can build up a small commune and start putting down roots (literally). At least that’s the path my post apocalypse musings lead me down.

This is assuming that the whole world goes dark at the same time. Because if it’s just us, then anyone with modern tech, weapons and fuel will easily slaughter us and/or takeover the land.
