Fun Times and Easy Projects [NOT 28/6/23]

Hi, friends!

I wanted to brag about a fun thing I made the other day. I made a smale jar of balsamic glaze for cooking and seasoning yummy summer food!

Ridiculously easy. Cheap bottle of balsamic vinegar, simmer until reduced by half. Put in glass jar, at least 6 month shelf live since well.. it’s still vinegar.

10/10, definitely recommend

Side note, don’t take any sort of deep breath while you’re stirring while it’s simmering, unless you want to clear out your sinuses delightfully fast.

  1. Yesterday I got chewed out at work for basically nothing by my supervisor and I didn’t react just looked blankly at him. I learned this skill when dealing with my dad when he blew his stack and have used it on many a supervisor.

I don’t understand why but I have been told it drives my supervisors up the wall.

    • I used to do that with my alcoholic boyfriend. He’d go on this drunken rant and I’d just look at him quizzically and when he ran out of steam I would say, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. You might as well be speaking Klingon.”

    • I too have been successful in doing the blank stare!

It only works if the person yelling gets off on power trips and is yelling to get a response out of you vs just yelling because they’re annoyed. Like the managers who are just yelling because a situation has them annoyed but they aren’t douchebags to their staff? The blank stare doesn’t make them angry.

  2. This is not really on-topic but we have decided to not enroll Faithful Hound in the exclusive preschool/kennel. He doesn’t like boarding experiences. I know that because we used to board him when he was a puppy just to shake off some of the energy and that kennel would send us cellphone videos of him, and he’d just be kind of walking/moping around.

So Better Half found some service that I guess functions like Uber. He put out the Bat Signal and a young woman responded and came over yesterday for a trial run. She is lovely and genuinely loves dogs, you can tell that, and she is French! BH was around for the trial run and basically told me to stifle it when I tried to engage (“this isn’t a social call, this is business”) but the point of having her is BH will not be around and I can’t really walk the dog myself, so with him gone and if she’s game, I have so many questions. Which I will ask. In French.

That’s one of the few remaining good things about New York. You don’t really need to travel. The world comes to you.

  3. I got the fun times part covered but leaving a not easy project.  Still working on friend’s deck but leaving for the holiday for our yearly beach holiday.  Lots of fun with adopted Ohana.  My daughters have done this since they were about 3 & we now have grown so big with all the families we take over a golf course for a family tournament.  Good times!

  4. ive got a little cork topped bottle…fill it for about a fifth with finely chopped habaneros seeds and all and some regular chilli flakes i have in the cupboard pretty much always and top it off with olive oil

give it a few days to sit around at least

then make a pasta salad (tuna in my case) and use it as a vinaigrette (oillagrette?)

got some kick to it…..makes for a feisty salad

    • Speaking of spice. I’ve been hearing rumblings over the past couple of years about how the Sriracha co hasn’t been able to source enough peppers to meet demand because of climate change. Now I’m hearing that people are stealing bottles from restaurants because they cost 30$. I’m not a fan of Sriracha but I feel their pain because my favorite Hong Kong hot sauce has been scarce for a couple of years now and I guess I will dream about that flavor for the rest of my life (it’s one of my favs).
