Guess Who [NOT 25/10/23]

[Admin note: 29/10/23 is DS’s 4th anniversary so pm @myopicprophet or email admin@deadsplinter.com if you’re willing/able/sentimental/nostalgic/amenable/you get the idea to contribute some celebratory – or not so celebratory – posts for that day]

Hi, friends! I hope your Wednesday is going well. We’re halfway through the week and that’s usually a good thing.

Do you ever wonder about a person based on cars or clothes or some other visual cues?

I was behind some asshole those morning in a Corvette with the licence plate “ORATOR.” First I assumed it was a male college professor having a midlife crisis. When I was in college, a male professor at Washington University St Louis threw a desk at a female student. He was tenured, so he didn’t get fired.

Anyways, once I was up close to the car I saw that it had the Back the Blue police propaganda licence plate as well.

So now I assume I was driving behind Josh Hawley.

  1. Well, right now I’m in Miami (bitch), and in a bit more than 24 hours, I’ve seen people dressed in clothes and driving cars that are way more ostentatious than I’ve seen in a while. I assume that I’m invisible to these people, and I don’t mind that at all.

  2. Yeah it makes me wonder. Guys driving jacked up pickups and H2s are a pretty good tell they aren’t packing much except massive overcompensation.

Clothes not so much. Nothing wrong with being well dressed even if the occasion doesn’t call for it.

Unless they brag about how much it costs like a certain older unloved brother of a real estate family (not Trump) then it goes to overcompensation for personal shortcomings.

If a guy wears a cravat or bow tie then I usually wonder. Dork, Dick or Dorky Dick.

    • A lot of what I’ve seen is basically casual wear but with the brand names (Armani Exchange, Balenciaga, etc.) given top billing. Maybe I’d be more in awe if I didn’t think that stuff came from some sweatshop in China or the Far East where the employees would probably have to work up to a year or more just to afford one article of the clothing they were making.

    • …I kind of have a soft spot for bow ties…like…hats from the 20s are cool but I don’t wear those either because it feels like an affectation & I feel the same about bow ties in that given a choice I’d say they were better than regular ties…they don’t flap about or get in the way…& people say they’re hard to tie but it’s basically the same as a shoelace just from a different angle…plus if you end up at the sort of do that requires them & you’re still going at the point of the night when none of them are tied any longer they look cooler than a regular tie if you ask me?

…mind you, I think a lot of the cues we used to have are less predictive than they were…some years back a friend who was working for a magazine about boats got me free tickets to a boat show…&…I think boats are pretty neat so I was taking advantage of the opportunity to poke about in yachts that cost more than a house but I kept telling the people working the stands not to waste their time on me because I definitely couldn’t buy one & one of them said to me “you know, a couple of years back I wouldn’t have but these days…you never know who might turn out to be a millionaire”?
