Almost 20 years ago, Peter Gabriel, while visiting a primate research center in Atlanta, Georgia, met bonobo siblings Kanzi and Panbanisha. They were introduced to the piano and jammed with Gabriel. He later participated in a Ted Talk and Workshop focused on interspecies communication using the internet. Language-enabled research for animals is often controversial, but I find this beautiful.
What does this have to do with happy hour? Not a damn thing. I just like it. But if you must have a connection, you can make a Vodka Bonobo to drink while watching.
Ingredients
- Ice Cubes
- Vodka Mandarin 2/3 part
- Orange Juice 2/3 part
- Grenadine 1/3 part
- Grapefruit Juice 1 dash
- Pineapple Juice 1 dash
Fill shaker with ice, add all ingredients, shake, and strain into a shot glass.
What fun! We just ordered some fruit liqueurs to mix with vodka or gin for the summer drinks. Blood orange…Pear…mmmmm. I suspect that if I’m feeling fancy, a shot of blood orange liqueur, two shots of whisky, and two shots of fresh blood orange juice in a tall glass over ice may be nice?
That sounds fantastic! I love blood orange, I use it in mimosas and toddies. have you tried any of the Koval liqueurs, they have interesting flavors. I bought the chrysanthemum and honey. it works nicely with bourbon.

I highly recommend Finlandia vodka if you can get it. Better than most “premiums” I’ve tried and very affordable.
Vodka season (summer) is coming up. I’ll make a note of that.
Of course, I’m Finnish so I might be biased……………….
Well, the animal theme works here because I’ve opened a Carménère from Balboa Winery that has a fantastic owl image on the bottle.

Love owls. I never can find them in the wild, but I love them.
That’s a beautiful bottle. One of my great uncles was an artist, and he was behind the floral bottles that were so popular in the 80s. He did them all from the cheap Gallo Brothers to the very expensive ones I could never afford. He made a nice living. Enjoy!
I spent several minutes this morning looking out the kitchen window and thinking I was seeing a fluffy owl on a fence post in the back of the yard. I was so excited because while I’ve seen owls flying at night into a nearby tree, I’ve never seen them in daylight.
Anyways, then it moved and turns out I was staring at the huge belly of a really big squirrel that was propped up sitting on its hind legs.
I’ve done the same thing. Fuzzy blob out on a reed along a creek — pull out the binocs, hoping for a raptor, ends up being a chunky squirrel that should not be perched on such a thin stalk!
ooh, I’ll take two of those thank ye very much Hannibal!
Coming right up!
@Hannibal – How weird! My youngest sister actually works at this Language Center now. It’s part of Georgia State University. There aren’t any Bonobo’s anymore – only Capuchins and Rhesus macaques. It functions more as a sanctuary now with light behavioral testing. It was pretty fascinating how the Bonobo seemed really interested in making the sounds on the piano.
@Lymond Small world and all that! That’s an interesting career. My daughter tried to get an internship at a nearby primate sanctuary. It’s mostly chimps so I was relieved when she didn’t. I was fascinated watching him play.
