Happy Hour [20/11/20]

You don’t have to drink alone.

This has been a great week for amateur astronomers. The Leonid Meteor Shower peaked Monday night/Tuesday morning. And all five bright planets, those that can be seen with the naked eye, are visible. With Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn appearing in the early night sky, Venus, and Mercury in the morning. So tonight mix up a heavenly cocktail and do a little sky watching.

Life On Mars

  • 2 oz rum
  • 3/4 oz lime juice
  • 1/2 oz pineapple juice
  • 1/2 oz cinnamon syrup
  • 1 tsp sour cherry cordial
  • 1/2 tsp Ancho Reyes

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a coupe. Garnish with a lime wedge.

You can make your own cinnamon syrup, chili liqueur, and cherry cordial.

This is such a weird time. Weeks are flying by yet time is standing still. I’m getting older, and grayer for sure, but life is stuck in neutral.

    • Yeah, kinda. My 18-year-old daughter got her driver’s license today. COVID fucked up all our plans to do it earlier. I feel sad because she can’t really “celebrate” it with anybody but her parents. Or maybe I feel sad because last night we got on a nostalgia kick and started YouTubing songs that she use to love on the now-defunct Noggin channel and I miss that goofy little kid so bad it hurts sometimes. Or maybe I’m sad because the world is pretty fucked up and that’s what she’s got to deal with and it shouldn’t be the way it is.

I think that’s really it — things shouldn’t be like this. An 18-year-old shouldn’t have to worry about mass shootings and pandemics and fascism and global warming and orange tyrants and all that other shit. I sure didn’t — I was out having fun at that age. This is not what I pictured for her.

Philip Bailey recorded a song called “Photogenic Memory” and one of the lyrics “the past looks better than it used to be.” I’m not entirely sure that’s true any more. But we can’t live back there.

Enough maudlin shit. Gonna pour another drink.

      • I know how you feel. I didn’t think this was the world I sending my daughter out to live in. At least she got to experience HS and college with everything, the good and bad, that goes along with that. But it’s a stranger, lonelier life than I had in my mid 20’s.

  4. We both left work a teensy bit early, so grocery, walk, and dinner cooking are completed. I will probably have a glass of the BSB 103 which @SplinterRIP recommended, it is delicious. And everyone stay tuned for 10:00AM ET on Saturday for @Lymond‘s inaugural Brain Drain!

      • …well, I was worried @elliecoo wouldn’t find it as tasty as I did but that seemed to turn out okay…so hopefully it’ll go down well when it does arrive

…I kinda feel like Im on safer ground recommending scotch whisky than bourbon because I’ve drunk a lot more of it over the years…but fingers crossed you decide it was worth the wait

  5. As per usual I have no alcohol in the house. I don’t drink much, but around the holidays I do start wanting to make things like mulled wine, hot buttered rum, and spiked hot chocolate.
Today is a real TGIF for me. It’s been an exhausting week, and I’m immensely looking forward to chilling the eff out for the next 2 days.

  6. I’m drinking “Rosé Bubbles”…from a can. It’s actually not bad…even slightly good.

Watching Jiu-Jitsu tonight. Starring Nick Cage and Tony Jaa. Both are favourites of mine for different reasons.

    • I remember my parents having couple glasses but I never had them. They fell out of fashion for a time. I’m glad their back in style, I think I’ll add some to my Christmas list.
