Happy Hour [21/8/20]

It’s Friday afternoon, you’ve got quarantine fatigue, the news is an emotional roller coaster, and it’s HOT. You need an adult beverage. But remember to drink responsibly Deadsplinters. Unlike the more than 7,000 residents of Okinawa found passed out on the street last year. Rojo-ne, sleeping on the road, has been associated with the warm weather and drinking of awamori, a centuries old rice based spirit.

I live in a college town and can attest to the fact that passing out on the pavement is not exclusive to Japanese culture. Google Images suggests it’s a universal experience. Still, with nearly 3,000 cases of rojo-ne already reported this year it does seem as if Okinawans are ahead of the curve in regards to street slumber. Enjoy yourself, but try not to overdo it!

  1. I was once in Breckenridge during the Ullr Festival (a celebration of the Norse god of snow).  It was 20 below zero with the wind chill and people were drinking on the streets.  The locals told us of previous years when drunks just passed out on the street & they picked up the frozen bodies the next day!  Luckily I wasn’t one of those idiots!  Looks like it is still a thing…

    • I’ve got a friend who was a ski instructor in Breckinridge and I’ve heard stories about the Ullr Festival! I’m glad you weren’t a frozen rojo-ne casualty.

    • i woke up under a couple inches of snow once….was surprisingly warm till i got up
suspect it might have been a different story had a not been wearing a full length waterproof trenchcoat that day

  2. and on the Happy Hour front, a friend & I did a favor for a friend that used to own our local beer store/pub.  She was so appreciative that we were able to do this job that a contractor had screwed up that she gave us 16 beers we can’t get in our area as a tip.  So looks like I’m going to have a nice happy hour!
