Sweet Summer

Happy summer, Deadsplinterdrinkers. And summer is a great season for sweet drinks. Fruit juice, lemonade, berries and rum, soda pop, coco coladas…. Maybe it’s because the heat tends to lower appetites for heavy food, and bodies crave calories in other forms.

I made some simple syrup with ginger and it’s a great base for both non alcoholic drinks and boozier stuff. For a quick guide, this is a good video, except he cooked the syrup for an hour, which seems like overkill to me. I just brought the ginger/sugar/water mix to a boil and then let it sit and cool before straining out the ginger.

So what about you, Deadsplintersweaters? Got a favorite sweet summer drink, with or without alcohol? Pina Coladas? Gatorade powder and sparkling water? Mojitos? Rum and Coke? Plain Coke?

Imagine you’re sitting in a lounge chair under an umbrella in the tropics — what are you drinking?

  1. Might I recommend the lychee martini?

I love this drink because I’ve only been to Hawaii once, and it was this amazing corporate junket, first-class airfare, super high-end resort, world-class golf course, I could go on.

Anyway, this was when everyplace and everyone had a “signature drink.” This was the signature drink of the resort. Around the same time I went to a couple of weddings and they both had signature drinks. At one I churlishly pointed out to the others at my table, “This isn’t a signature drink. It’s been around since at least the 1920s. It’s actually mentioned in the novel–“

  2. barley hops yeast and water

vodka redbull and blue curacao is an option tho…..i do find it hard to resist a nuclear green drink

self preservation is not my forte it seems

anyways…i feel like i need to send out a thank you to deadsplinter….pretty sure its the duans that have made stuff like this turn up in my recs (if it wasnt outright posted here)

  3. Thanks for covering Happy Hour for me @bluedogcollar. My company just left and while I’m grateful to have friends and family I am looking forward to going back to my hermit ways.
I made black raspberry and mulberry simple syrups. I like bourbon and rye year round with a teaspoon of something fruity in the summer.

    • There are a couple of mulberry trees around me and I should try making simple syrup from them. I’m not a big fan of the fruit because it’s awfully sweet, but it may work better as a mixer.
