Happy Hour [27/10/23]

I need a drink

Boogeymen are everywhere, and they’ve been around forever. I miss the old fiends. Their victims were usually in the wrong place at the wrong time, doing something they shouldn’t have done as opposed to all of us being targeted by corporate greed, unscrupulous politicians, and gun nuts. Anyway, do you have a fave monster, DeadSplinters? Share your local cryptid or urban legend with us. To take our minds off the real demons out there for a moment.

  1. …I guess I have a couple of answers depending on how important the provenance is to the thing?

…so…probably the pictsies from the discworld…otherwise known as the wee free men or the nac mac feegle

…but…they’re kind of a riff on the sort of split that some traditions run with where the fae are concerned…& I spent enough time leafing through brewer’s dictionary of phrase & fable to have developed, if not favorites, at least a few preferences?

…the kind of helpful fae you get in things like the shoemaker’s tale or some of the norse/scandi stuff…or even the less vengeful djinn or some of the yokai…or a lot of cultures take on the trickster, for another strand…appeal to me a fair bit as a sort of anthropomorphic way of imagining the natural world to be a somewhat capricious & disinterested but ultimately terrifyingly powerful thing in ways at odds with its changeable or indeed unobservable appearance…but that’s a profusion of creatures that kind of defeats the object of claiming to have made a pick

…hence the pictsies…who have all that going for them with a side of terry pratchett’s sense of humor…some wee bits of tartan…& an appetite for taking on problems many times bigger than themselves which ought to scare the daylights out of scunners everywhere

    …so…umm…them lot?

  2. obviously saint nick…..once every 32 years the 5th of december is a real bad day

you know….the other 31 years its kinda cute (and racist…but i think we are finally getting past that)

  3. …I’d like to make a 2nd nomination…from the saga comics…lying cat…& if the image will load…I think it might set the appropriate tone?

…it’s not a talking cat, exactly…it only says “lying”…but not like groot only says groot…& we might not need to be told…but…how much would I love to see one on deck every time a politician or someone who stood to make an obscene amount of money on the outcome of something got asked a question?

      • …man thing was the “original” by a few months or so…but in typical fashion his DC doppelganger would be swamp thing…there’s arguably more differences between them than a lot of other examples of that kind of doubling up…but at least until alan moore got ahold of swamp thing I think there’s an argument marvel’s man thing was the more interesting of the two?

  4. We have MoMo the Monster (Bigfoot, but idiot Missouri people claiming they saw it back in the 1970s).

We also have the Ozark Howler out in the Ozark mountains and that one goes back to the 1800s. There were a lot of Scottish settlers in the region, seems a lot like the Cu Sith except a huge black cat.
