Boogeymen are everywhere, and they’ve been around forever. I miss the old fiends. Their victims were usually in the wrong place at the wrong time, doing something they shouldn’t have done as opposed to all of us being targeted by corporate greed, unscrupulous politicians, and gun nuts. Anyway, do you have a fave monster, DeadSplinters? Share your local cryptid or urban legend with us. To take our minds off the real demons out there for a moment.
…I guess I have a couple of answers depending on how important the provenance is to the thing?
…so…probably the pictsies from the discworld…otherwise known as the wee free men or the nac mac feegle
…but…they’re kind of a riff on the sort of split that some traditions run with where the fae are concerned…& I spent enough time leafing through brewer’s dictionary of phrase & fable to have developed, if not favorites, at least a few preferences?
…the kind of helpful fae you get in things like the shoemaker’s tale or some of the norse/scandi stuff…or even the less vengeful djinn or some of the yokai…or a lot of cultures take on the trickster, for another strand…appeal to me a fair bit as a sort of anthropomorphic way of imagining the natural world to be a somewhat capricious & disinterested but ultimately terrifyingly powerful thing in ways at odds with its changeable or indeed unobservable appearance…but that’s a profusion of creatures that kind of defeats the object of claiming to have made a pick
…hence the pictsies…who have all that going for them with a side of terry pratchett’s sense of humor…some wee bits of tartan…& an appetite for taking on problems many times bigger than themselves which ought to scare the daylights out of scunners everywhere
…so…umm…them lot?
I like the idea of darker Fae.
…that’s the beauty of the nac mac feegle…how light or dark they might be said to be…is directly proportional to how big a scunner you happen to be…so it’s best to stay on the right side of them?
I was unaware of this local legend until I visited the Cryptozoology Museum in Portland earlier this year:

Damn DNA testing ruining all the fun.
obviously saint nick…..once every 32 years the 5th of december is a real bad day
you know….the other 31 years its kinda cute (and racist…but i think we are finally getting past that)
Have you seen the show Atlanta? Not sure if you can over there but they had a great Black Piet or whatever his name is, episode.
zwarte piet
i have not seen atlanta….first ive heard of that show tbh
Donald Gloved is kind of a loser managing his rapper cousin, Paper Boi. When PaperBoi hits it big they go on a European tour and end up in the Netherlands around Christmas and encounter Zwarte Piet. Which they do not appreciate as you can imagine, lol.
gonna have to find this one…lol
tbh,,,,growing up with it….and being white….i never thought of it as being racist….its just zwarte piet
the dude what brings the presents….or sweets
never gave it more thought than that
i guess thats whats white privilege is
the luxury to not even think about whats going on…coz presents
and then as an adult…to keep it up…coz tradition and fond memories
oh wow……thats an interpertation of all you people look the same i havent seent before…lol
also interdasting adaptation of the footie song
i actually cant find the one in the vid…..i think
that not it….lol…same song tho
I thought it was hilarious! 😂
sorry got distracted by th background music
the clips a bit off
not so much in its depiction of zwarte piet…that is what is
but almost no one would turn up to a gig as zwarte piet for an international artist
we’re racist…not stupid
I’m sure!
i’m hopeful,,,,
shits gonna get bad over here if im wrong
…I’d like to make a 2nd nomination…from the saga comics…lying cat…& if the image will load…I think it might set the appropriate tone?
…it’s not a talking cat, exactly…it only says “lying”…but not like groot only says groot…& we might not need to be told…but…how much would I love to see one on deck every time a politician or someone who stood to make an obscene amount of money on the outcome of something got asked a question?
I’m could go for lying cat.
Lying cat 💙
In comics, I was always a fan of Man Thing.
https://www.gamesradar.com/man-thing-MCU-marvel/
I’m not familiar with that but it looks cool. I do like were creatures.
…man thing was the “original” by a few months or so…but in typical fashion his DC doppelganger would be swamp thing…there’s arguably more differences between them than a lot of other examples of that kind of doubling up…but at least until alan moore got ahold of swamp thing I think there’s an argument marvel’s man thing was the more interesting of the two?
Night Marchers!
and Madam Pele
Is she a vengeful goddess? I feel like she should be.
She is if you take her children (the rocks) from the Volcanoes National park. You will be cursed with bad luck until you send them back. They get thousands of rocks in the mail each year.
Good 😈
I asked some folks working at the hotel the day before I went to Volcanoes if it was disrespectful to touch rocks as long as I didn’t move them or pick them up, and they said it was okay. I asked a park ranger and got the same answer. Anyways, it was an amazing place to be and I touched some cool rocks!
Touch but don’t take is fine.
We have MoMo the Monster (Bigfoot, but idiot Missouri people claiming they saw it back in the 1970s).
We also have the Ozark Howler out in the Ozark mountains and that one goes back to the 1800s. There were a lot of Scottish settlers in the region, seems a lot like the Cu Sith except a huge black cat.
I never heard of the Ozark Howler, that’s pretty cool.
