Happy Hour [31/1/20]

You don’t have to drink alone.

I’m not very good at games. I lack the patience and focus to develop the skills needed to compete on anything other than the most rudimentary level. Still, I used to spend enough time in the local watering holes to have to play common bar room amusements from time to time. One of which I eventually got pretty good at.

POOL

In spite of growing up with a table in the basement I always sucked at pool. I only played in public when pressured into it, always an embarrassing experience.

Darts

I was slightly less terrible at darts. I was usually able to hit the board rather than the wall most of the time. You wouldn’t want me on your team though unless absolutely necessary.

Pinball

Pinball was my jam. With no teammates depending on me, playing was much less stressful. I got to be really good, often beating my challengers. I’m no wizard but it’s a good place for this cover.

One of these days I’m going to get myself a vintage machine to practice on. With pinball making a comeback I might find a reason to hit the bars more often.

Tell me about your favorite pub games. Not drinking games, we’ll get into those another time.

  1. I too grew up with pool tables in the house and thought I was the shit when I headed off to college. I found a place with a table the 1st few days and started with a few wagers, the next thing I knew I’d lost all my book money. The person who took it told me to try darts so I did. I had a slightly better outcome and still play darts today (no plastic) and very little pool.

I played some pinball but was never that big into it. It was basically the activity while we were waiting to get on the Defender or Zaxxon game.

  2. My father and uncles were excellent pool players and tried to teach me. I don’t know why I never got the hang of it. I hate team sports, I don’t like letting people down if I screw up,so pinball was perfect for me.

  3. We had a pool table, ping pong & pinball & I sucked at all of them. In fact, if it wasn’t for a local volleybar where I did a pretty good job defending the sand court, I would not be good at any pub games.

    • Our neighborhood had beach access to walnut lake when I was in high school and there was a ping pong table there that I played but I was never very good at.

I don’t think I ever heard of a Vollybar before but I’d try that for sure. Our old house was near a horseshoe bar in Lynnwood that The Fish from KRKO would do shows from and we go play and watch him do his show.

In the summer our meetup group has a picnic and we’ll breakout the cornhole. I’m defending champ!

  4. I suck at volleyball too. We mostly played at outdoor parties where I was usually too wasted.

  5. Foosball!!!

I forgot all about it. I loved foosball. I’d get a foosball table over a pool table if we had the room in the basement.

  6. We had an old pinball machine in our rec room when I was growing up. My technique when I was little was to just constantly be working the flippers like non-stop. It always cracked my brother up. There wasn’t much finesse involved, but it worked.

  7. Lol, whatever it takes!

  8. I am mediocre at pool. Suck at Foosball and its Canada City Cousin Bubble Hockey. Mediocre at pinball.

Best singles event for me was the local singles group pool night. Easy to talk to people. Very casual. Got over my inherent shyness (social anxiety) with a beer in the system. Landed a few dates via pool night.

  9. I suck at every game imaginable – I am not competitive at all(probably because I know I will never win). I am though, weirdly drawn to bluegrass covers of any song – so Cheers! for for this one of Pinball Wizard.

    • They do Tommy , the whole thing. It’s great!
