Happy Hour [7/8/20]

You don’t have to drink alone.

The first week of August has been unseasonably cool, most welcome after the brutal heat of July. And though the dog days of summer are officially coming to an end the forecast shows temperatures climbing back up. All I can think is – I miss having a pool. It’s fun looking at extreme backyard pool ideas online. I wouldn’t want a Lucas Lagoon style pool, that’s not really my aesthetic. And there is the environmental impact to consider. I want something modern, understated, that leaves as small of a carbon footprint as possible. I want a shipping container pool. They may not be the most attractive pools around but when the temperature is approaching 100 degrees I doubt I’d care.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of pool? Tips on buying and installing?

  1. over here july was nice n easy…really..its was around 20c and grey for a whole month…it was rather nice…august on the other hand is currently hotter than the sun….and im wierdly okay with that…its not even making me sleep much worse…maybe i did finally go crazy

    • This may be the year we’ve all gone mad.

  2. It’s been hot here this week. We have a hot tub that we basically don’t heat in the summer, so that it turns into a soaker tub. Not tempted to have a full pool — just so much maintenance and water use.

“I used to be quite the diver, though.”

    • Could you do the triple lindy?

  3. Didn’t know shipping container pools were a thing.  We looked into using some for our house addition but ended up being more expensive than regular wood, etc.  Our weather is perfect, 70ish light breeze, rained yesterday so no watering today.  Time to open one of these for happy hour!

I do like to Swim though…

    • We need rain terribly. The temp is going up tomorrow and it already feels steamy. Yeah, enjoy your beer and weather. 🤬

j/k I hope you are enjoying both!

      • We have the best summers of anyplace but pay the price come October/November when we get permadrizzle & gray skies for months straight.

  4. Don’t need a pool–we live on a lake. But, for reasons passing understanding, at least three of our neighbors have pools.

    • I understand it – fish, snakes, crawly things. I prefer a pool.

  5. dog days and cat nights!

    August 17: Cat Nights Begin

Cat Nights begin on August 17. This term harks back to the days when people believed in witches. A rather obscure old Irish legend said that a witch could turn herself into a cat eight times, but on the ninth time (August 17), she couldn’t regain her human form. This bit of folklore also gives us the saying, “A cat has nine lives.” Because August is a yowly time for cats, this may have prompted the speculation about witches on the prowl in the first place. Also, nights continue to get longer. Cats, crepuscular creatures, are nocturnal hunters. Their superior night vision means that the nights belong to them.

    • I never heard of Cat Nights. And never knew where the nine lives thing came from. Cool, thanks.
