Happy Hour [9/7/21]

I need a drink

Coors Light, the official beer of the Stanley Cup Champions, Tampa Bay Lightning, is issuing a limited-edition brew made from the rink ice of Amalie Arena.

“We thought it’d be awesome to celebrate with the people in Tampa by creating a special batch of Coors Light for them to enjoy, created from the ice where the Lightning put all of their blood, sweat, and tears into winning the championship,” Chris Steele, marketing director for Coors Light, told ESPN on Wednesday.

The 55 half-barrels will be available on tap and in collectible growlers at Tampa area bars in time for the Lightning’s Stanley Cup parade. Not to worry, Lightning fans, the ice was filtered to meet food safety regulations. But is unfortunately still Coors Light.

What are you drinking, Deadsplinters?

  1. I was recently given an excellent bottle of whiskey, I am drinking that. And for others, I will mix homemade peach simple syrup with peach vodka and the bottle of peach liquor I had to special order for the stupid state store(If it has arrived).

  2. umm… not coors light?… you know what they say bout american beer…. its like sex in a canoe
    fucking close to water
warsteiner was on offer….soooo..thats what im having
its pretty good at this price point…at its normal premium price i’d say its over rated…not bad…just pricey

    • It says ’86 or ’87. There’s a surprising amount of mid-80s beefcake in it. In the 80s Coors became a huge no-no in the gay community (the Coors family member who ran the company was…). A gay person would never order or serve it and all the gay bars stopped carrying it, whereas before it was ubiquitous, I don’t know why. The gay allies joined in.

Sales took such a hit that they found a gay Coors family member who did a sort of apology tour, God knows how much money they donated to various causes, but to this day (35 years later) I won’t drink it. No loss; I don’t really drink beer. I can’t remember the last time I saw someone order a Coors beer and not all of my friends are 50-something gay men.

      • @MatthewCrawley Light beers in general were big in the 80’s and Coors really  went after the national market. I think there was something vaguely exotic to people on the East Coast about Colorado. It had a rough, woodsy image. I don’t drink beer anymore but I never liked Coors.

      • That was a weird boycott. It started as a union thing and then took on a life of its own. If memory serves the gay boycott was based on the Coors family’s support of conservative politicians. Adolf’s grandsons were big John Birch types (go figure). It seemed like the union boycott sorta worked or at least generated publicity, so people thought, hey, fuck these guys. I don’t remember a specific LBGT+ issue that sparked the whole thing.

I can’t remember ever drinking a Coors, though I’m sure I have if they were the only thing available at redneck social events.

      • I’m not much for mega-corp beers if there are craft-brew types available…

But I have a vague impression of Coors being associated with some sort of right-wing bullshit, enough that I went out of my way to avoid it ten-twenty years back when avoiding it may have taken effort.

For some reason, I feel like I’m thinking of something tying them to white supremacism or similar bullshit.  To be honest, I don’t really care, and I can’t be arsed to put any effort into finding out why.  If that’s not enough reason, I’m also mad they haven’t issued a legal cease-and-desist to that “louder with crowder” asshole, who seems to always throw his name in the Coors font/stylization.  If they are cool with allowing their brand to be associated with bullying bigots, I’d rather remain sober then support their absolutely morally bankrupt coffers.

  3. I’m having a vodka tonic with lime. The sun came out and it’s summer again after raining for 2 days? 3 days? It’s all a blur.  I went to pick up my CSA and the cat is being super clingy now. He’s a momma’s boy – shhhh he hates it when I say that – how dare I leave the house.

  4. Just got home from another long day, I’m going to drink another beer for a cause, this time from Cloudburst Brewing…

Hey! It’s June! Which means it’s time to fly our beautiful big rainbow flag and celebrate PRIDE! (ps – it’s always time to do this, as well as advocate for our LQBTQIA+ community.)  This year, we’ll be donating 10% of tasting room sales from this IPA to Gay City, a Cap Hill based, community driven organization that hosts a wide array of programs, services, & events – from free HIV testing & healthcare options, to fostering queer arts & culture, to supporting youth education. To help the spread the word about Gay City, we brewed a deliciously diverse IPA with Amarillo, Citra, Comet, Loral & Cascade hops.  For more info, visit http://www.gaycity.org

  5. I just got home from my community’s art festival/Bastille Day celebrations and let;s just say there will be no NOT tonight because I’m not sober enough to write it.

I had a lovely caipirinha from a restaurant and then a nice dry cider from Side Project Brewing and then not 1 but 2 lovely strong rum dumpsters from one of the bars.

    I feel fantastic, friends. FANTASTIC
