Happy Long Weekend! [DOT 1/9/23]

Hope everyone had a great week. Probably better than mine which feels like a complete shitshow work-wise. Too much going on! So I’m looking forward to unplugging for a minute this weekend.

  1. …anyone care to speculate on the how or why of something I’ve only just come across that seems to have happened recently on ex-twitter?

…it seems they somehow broke the internal linking for embedded media in tweets…but only in the 2011-2014 range

…which overlaps a few significant things like the arab spring, which used twitter pretty extensively…& various influence campaigns & social media fuckery were going on…think BLM had its start somewhere in there, too

…it’s certainly tempting to break out the tinfoil…especially after that new yorker piece about the mekon’s form when it comes to pulling strings in the interests of…unsavoury people?

    • As kids these days are saying: sus af.

That’s all I’m willing to contribute on the issue today. I’ve got less important things to do like continue to laugh at that candy corn bitch.

    • To be “fair”, Melon Husk is one of those unsavory people.

    • Hard to tell if it’s a “new feature” that sucks, an “oops we broke it,” the “we can’t afford that anymore” or an actual plan of attack. Knowing Elmo, he’s too scattershot to really do the dirty work.

    • I’ve never been married. Longest relationship was a 1 year and a half.

Does that mean I’m gay, GOPers? Or just not a “relationship” person?

      • It certainly means they won’t be donating to your presidential campaign. Try to contain your disappointment.

    • Deep in that article there’s this nugget:

At the same time, Scott has the advantage of being boosted by billionaire backer Larry Ellison, who has showered a pro-Scott super PAC with tens of millions of dollars.

This helps explains why there’s been a flurry of handwringing from conservatives posing as concerned centrists about small donor donations making America more polarized. Jonah Goldberg wrote one, a Washington Post analyst who used to write for the Weekly Standard, and the NY Times yesterday all have been pushing the point in recent weeks.

They want the field cleared for guys like Larry Ellison. It’s just an effort to wipe out people like AOC and Elizabeth Warren, and the people who promote it — somehow without finding all of the substantive rebuttals to their “research” — are trying to kill debate. As usual.

    • So both the SC senators might be closeted gay?ย  That seems very on brand!

    • The bit about there using “inadvertent” to describe so many non-disclosures is hilarious.

Not only because it draws attention to how much of a deliberate pattern it was. But also because he was clearly concerned enough about legalities to consistently stick to a legal term and not go to thesauraus.com for some variations.

He’s not on the hook for violating any Supreme Court requirements, because those have no teeth. But I wouldn’t be suprised if there’s more percolating in the background with IRS implications, and he’s worried about something going off script and opening himself up to real legal issues.

      • IRS regulations are a good point. All the grifting justices are acting squirrelly, so not declaring these “gifts” as income could come into play here.

Many a criminal has been tripped up by tax evasion.

        • And who knows, there may be civil suit exposure. The stuff going on with benefits for his family is squirrelly, he’s a squirrelly guy, and you have to wonder if Crow stepped in to make a lawsuit go away for Thomas. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is about more than money.

    • When you were a child you were a treated rough but you were never brought up right

You were always spoiled with a thousand toys but still you whined all night

Your mother who torture you tells you the best ways of dodging tax

And your father’s still perfecting ways of hating everyone black

      You better stop, look around

Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes

Here comes your nineteenth Truth Social breakdown

      Oh, who’s to blame

      That Donald’s gone insane

Well, nothing we charge him don’t seem to work

It only seems to make the matters worse

      Oh, please

You were still in military school when you had that fool who really messed your mind

And after that you turned your back on treating people kind

In your first admin I tried so hard to rearrange your mind

But after awhile I realized you just stealing mine

      You better stop, look around

Here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes

  2. We had a similar whine from the usual suspects when Health Canada made recommendations to basically limit alcohol intake because of various cancers.

All I can say is that I wished Ted Cruz had done a Kid Rock and drank a Bud Light.

    • And they always give the game away because these are the emptiest of suggestions, with zero regulatory anything to back them up, which means you could just ignore them like every normal person who wants to drink three beers (or whatever) a week. But then they’d have to run for election on “what if rich people got more stuff” and it turns out that’s a tougher sell than WOKE DEMS TRYING TO TAKE AWAY BEER AGAIN!!!!!!11!!!!!!!

    • off topic: was it you that said you were coming to DC?

  3. Please Ted Cruz, drink a lot more. Your followers too.

Just don’t drive and stay away from guns.

But yes. Drink more. A lot more.

  4. From a week ago:

Construction Bids for EV Projects in Georgia Go to Gov. Kempโ€™s Donors

    https://prospect.org/power/2023-08-24-construction-bids-electric-vehicles-georgia-brian-kemp/

He did the right thing yesterday by squelching calls by Trump allies in the Georgia legislature to go after Fani Willis. But it’s worth noting that he’s also been behind laws out to block Black voter turnout. The consistent thing among all of these is that Kemp is acting on political calculations to cement his control over the state, and very possibly act as a springboard to a presidential run, either if Trump’s campaign collapses next year or in 2028.

  5. Oh man, “Candy Corn Bitch” was a great L7 bootleg….

  6. We’re going into the holiday weekend with a dear wife who is sick with COVID and I’m on lockdown even though I’m not sick.

    Long weekend indeed.

    • Hope for a quick recovery without any long term issues and that you avoid it all together.

    • Ugh, I hope itโ€™s a mild case and she isnโ€™t feeling too bad.

    • I’ve been hearing about a rebound. Sorry about la Signora.

      • This isn’t a rebound, it’s the first COVID infection for this house.ย  We made it through the pandemic and the past 2.5 years without getting it and now it hits.ย  Late as usual.

    • There was a point last week where I thought I might have it. Turned out to be allergies, but I hate that whole “Is it…?” thought process. I hope you guys have a mild case or cases and that you are able to hunker down on the farm.

    • Oh no! @Luigi-Vuoto wishing you both well, and fast recovery for your dear wife!

  7. Alito’s disclosure is out too, and it turns out he owns a ton of individual stocks and votes all the time on matters affecting their value.

    https://www.msnbc.com/deadline-white-house/deadline-legal-blog/full-text-samuel-alito-annual-financial-disclosure-rcna102777

On top of the ethics, the stupidity of his finances is infuriating. He not only has all of those individual stocks, he has a crazy mishmash of mutual funds.

He should have just had an accountant liquidate his assets and create a blind trust, then have a financial advisor cover the bases with a few funds that balance a few basic goals like stability, reasonable income, and liquidity.

He’s a classic wannabe smart guy.

    • Yes, but he’s an entitled, right-wing, prick who knows as well as Thomas that he can do whatever he damned well pleases because there are no real consequences waiting for them.
