Happy New Year! [DOT 1/1/24]

I fully expect to be sound asleep before the ball drops and probably still asleep when you’re reading this. Looking forward to one last day of nothing before heading back to work tomorrow.

  1. Bridget Jones’s Diary! I loved those two movies (I think there were two) because I love slapstick rom-coms and that’s because I live in one. You haven’t lived until you’ve been peacefully snoring away with your Better Half and then the Faithful Hound gets restless and decides to jump up and snuggle in and gives you a good kick in the kidneys. Among other misadventures.

A very happy 2024 to all of us. I hope your hangovers aren’t too severe. I don’t have one, which is a gross disappointment to me, but we spent a quiet evening chez nous eating a variant of @hammerzeitgeist ‘s Marry Me Chicken and watching yet another “Hawaii 5-0” rerun. This is all discussed in the comments sections of last night’s posts.

  2. So, where is everyone? Sleeping off their hangovers? I was reminded that when I first moved to New York I was a lowly freelancer, and then I became a salaried second-in-command, and then promoted and took over the department. You’ll see where this is going.

One of the freelancers (not one of mine, but the whole company ran on freelancers) told me how insulted she was when a couple of my coworkers would call her at like 10:30 am or something and they’d say, “I’m sorry, did I wake you up?”

I loved her. She was an incredibly jaded chainsmoker and one of the funniest and smartest people I’ve ever met. She’s another one I’ve lost touch with. Life is so fleeting. No wonder people believe in an afterlife. It would take me all of eternity to catch up with the hundreds, if not thousands, of people I’ve interacted with over the years/decades.
