Hi, friends!
I hope your day is going well. If you’re in the US, I hope your pets are NOT* terrified by dipshits with fireworks.
I get irrationally annoyed that so many places are closed on some holidays. Like I get that July 4th and Easter are important to some people, but like I’d also like to enjoy doing errands and whatnot today when it’s a weekday and I’m off work.
Are you having a good day? Day drinking? I am! Not like I’m going anywhere today.
*I clearly failed to proofread this post and forgot the word “not” in the initial publishing. Sorry!!!!
Rained all day here. Couldn’t even get some much needed garden work done. So I watched movies all day.
Took the day off yesterday and did (most of) what I needed to do. Hell, it helped level out the pain in the ass of having a holiday on a fucking Tuesday as well!
There’s an Italian phrase called “fare il ponte” which means to make a bridge. That means, when a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday no one expects anyone to show up anywhere on the preceding Monday or the following Friday. It’s a very civilized country.
They have the same concept in Spain as well — hacer el puente — if memories from long ago serve, and I’m glad to have the resources and wherewithal to apply that precious bit of knowledge today.
That’s interesting. I didn’t know there was a phrase for that in Spanish. I’ll have to keep that in mind the next time BH and I show up in España and our destination town is locked up tight because the day before was the Saint’s Day.
One of the nice things about New York is that few holidays are actually observed. The banks shut down, like they do everywhere when the Stock Market’s closed, but otherwise it’s a free-for-all.
Even Christmas, which in most parts of the country is probably the most sacred day of the year, along with Easter, the bodegas are all open and there are plenty of restaurants that do a thriving business, not just the Chinese ones, which used to be the case. The stores are mostly shut but who cares, everyone shops online and in the brick-and-mortar stores nowadays everything is locked up and it’s very time-consuming to find an employee who will summon the will to open a locked display case so that you can retrieve a tube of toothpaste or whatever. That actually isn’t quite so much of a problem in my area because my neighborhood is one of the sources of the shoplifting gangs so they mostly leave us alone and go to more affluent areas and loot there.
For the first time in decades none of the four dogs care about fireworks. Whew! (Based on past terrified dogs, I can discuss thunder shirts, weighted blankets, gabapentin, dog cbd, loud white noise, etc.)
Our permanent dog + foster don’t seem to care at all about fireworks. Which is good, because I’m off in a little bit to set off a few minor league ones.
We’ve never had a dog who’s taken any notice of fireworks, thunder, none of it. One of our dogs was a fairly high-strung cairn terrier, and even she didn’t seem to mind. I don’t know why. I can’t imagine it is/was our calming human presence.
One of my childhood dogs was not bothered by thunder or fireworks, but he panicked at the sound of the vent hood over the stove being turned on.
I got nothing, he was an otherwise normal dog.
Sheldon does not care about fireworks. We did have a thunderstorm earlier and a brief power failure, which shut off his heat lamp. That perturbed him greatly as it interrupted his basking. Now that his lamp is back on, he’s sitting on his rock warming himself. The booming outside is of no interest.
The annual neighbor gathering to light fireworks is now over. They were so minor league that not only were no dogs upset, but a neighbor walking her tiny dog interrupted us in the middle with the dog completely unconcerned.

There were dinguses in our neighborhood lighting them off until 11 p.m., which, c’mon. Most of us had to be at work this morning. If you are one of those neighbors, I have a few choice words to etch into your front lawn through the magic of horticultural vinegar. 😑
