The Audubon winners is like crack for me. I love those shots and just get jealous I haven’t yet got anything that would place but it is my retirement plan to change that. Thanks for sharing this. Today I left a job next to a greenbelt and as I was leaving a mother racoon walked into the middle of the street with her baby right on her tail. She spotted me and got on her hind legs to get a better look. I was just getting in my car and fumbling to get my cell phone to get a shot when she changed directions back into the greenbelt. Usually don’t see them in the day so hope they weren’t sick or starving. I need to bring my good camera and big lens to this job, I keep seeing crazy stuff. A few days ago I saw a Mt. Beaver that figured out how to use a gutter drainage pipe as his personal tunnel to get to where the food is from where it dumps into a gulch. He broke a hole in the pipe so he could pull plants into the pipe and take them down into his den. I saw an owl the other day in the area of the pipe that must have been hunting him. Last week a hawk carried off a bunny in the driveway across the street and a few days ago I saw a falcon just sitting on the neighbors roof.
On the Fourth as I was walking to the parade I saw two deer grazing in a front yard around the corner who casually then casually crossed the road, right in front of a woman walking dogs and a pack of joggers. Weirdly none of them had noticed these deer 20 feet away until I pointed them out. My wife’s response later was they’re just so common in the city nobody really cares.
My day was okay. Went to the eye surgeon. Turns out they only do one eye at a time. So I have to go back in two weeks. I can already see an improvement in my vision. But the floaters are driving me crazy, I have a headache, and my eyes are sore. I don’t think staring at a screen is helping so I’m going to go listen to some music. Goodnight, Deadsplinters.
I had my cataracts removed 2 years ago. But I developed what they call opacity and have to have tat removed. It’s amazing to be able to see well again. 🙂
My wife’s best friend had both done yesterday & is doing well. Each specialist can make their own rules as to doing both together or one at a time. Here most docs will only do one knee at a time but my brother had both done together in Hawaii. He had to travel to a different island so that may play a part but here 99% of docs will only do one at a time.
On a Monday morning zoom call, right when I got back from vacation, it was announced that one of my coworkers had a massive heart attack over the weekend and passed. He was 55, in seemingly good health, with three young children that he had 100% custody of.
He’d only worked for us for a while (about 8 months) but was an overall great guy. Very clever, amiable, quick witted, and an amazing Dad. This guy left the office every day at 3 to be home for his kids, never failed.
The calling hours were this evening and the funeral is tomorrow at 10am. I just feel so bad for his kids. Smooch your loved ones because you never know. XO
my day went fine….. no mums barging in on my naked ass….

There is a skunk walking around my yard and we found what we think may be an alien artifact. It looks like a coconut, but it seems to be metal or cement of some sort. There is a hole at one end and I tried to break it with a hoe and it wouldn’t break but it definitely sounded hollow or I’d think it was a civil war cannonball. We pulled part of a stump out of the ground last week and it looks like something was digging in the hole left by the stump and dug out this whatever-it-is. We were looking at it in wonder when the skunk walked by.
Yesterday I saw a great blue heron fly underneath me as I crossed the bridge over the stream behind my house.
I didn’t have a camera because I was jogging, so here are the top entries and winners in the 2023 Audubon contest, including a few herons.

Nature is coming for you.

Those are amazing, thanks!
We’ve got one that lives on our lake. When it squawks it sounds like something out of Land of the Lost.
I’m going to see Ali Wong with friends tonight. Pray for my husband as he has to solo the bedtime routine for HZ1-2-3 🙏🙏🙏 🙃🤪🫠
I bet the hub owes you one.
Have fun!
You definitely deserve a night out, have a blast. They will be fine.
Have a great time!
Oh that’s going to be awesome! Every clip I’ve seen of hers has been fucking hilarious!

Good stuff; I want to hear from you in a month, after both eyes are recovered. I hear good things about cataract surgery.

That is horrible!!! I virtual hug all you people & will hug my wife if she ever comes home.
That’s terrible. So sorry for his family, friends, and colleagues.

Is this it? Looks good, but I think I might like the kibbelling even better. Less likely to make a mess of myself.

yep thats it….. kibbeling is actually pretty much the same thing…..but in bite size chunks
i dont know what genre this is but i want more of it
Reminds me of this.

Maybe a piece from a ball mill? Like a bearing for grinding down things?
They used hollow cannon balls in the Civil War, so maybe?
It looks similar to the middle one in the top row but it’s less perfectly spherical.
