I mean, he has to be a huge fucking dumbass to even attempt to fix the league’s communications apparatus to make a statement about the ongoing protest, given the NFL’s continued blackballing of Colin Kaepernick for protesting this very fucking thing, right?
Whatever advisor told Roger Goodell, who represents the owners who have banished Kap from league existence, who are so petty that they wouldn’t allow Kaepernick to be a free agent in their shitty, horrible football video game, that the NFL just had to take a stance on police brutality should be fired without paid. Whatever Karen or Chet gave him that idea should never work in public relations ever again. Christ, what a bonehead move.
Colin Kaepernick took a knee, silently protesting police brutality in 2016. Colin Kaepernick was roundly criticized by the league’s various mouthpieces for not simply knowing his role and shutting his mouth while his people died. The President of the Actual United States called Colin Kaepernick and anyone else who protested a son of a bitch. He was released by the 49ers, and he’s been unemployed ever since.
They worked The Player’s Coalition, a group of well-meaning but ultimately useless black players and also Josh McKown for some reason, into having the rest of the league’s black players cease to protest. The Player’s Coalition got some funds diverted from other league propaganda factories charities so they could go be the respectful negros in the scenario, while Eric Reid pointed out that taking money from the owners without securing Kaepernick an opportunity was pointless. Reid soon found himself blackballed until the Panthers were so desperate for a decent safety they had no choice but to sign him.
The league would continue to blackball him while paying actual, literally terrible quarterbacks like Blaine Gabbert and Case Keenum over and over and fucking over again, despite all evidence being that they were terrible. The Dolphins once coaxed Jay Cutler out of a retirement he had no intention of abandoning, paid him a shitload of money, and watched in amazement as it turned out that paying a quarterback who does not give a fuck anymore is actual a deeply dumb move.
The NFL scheduled a sham workout for Colin Kaepernick without notice to either himself or the teams who might be interested in signing him, and when Kap balked at the league’s clear attempt to silence him, Kap was once again roundly criticized for not making the best of a clearly fucking rigged opportunity.
Yes, this group of white owners who have shunned someone who, at worst, was an adequate quarterback, decided now was the fucking time to release a statement about George Floyd. Words can not accurately convey how loudly tons of actually sane people screamed “fuck you” at Goodell and the league as whole.
Because how fucking dare they. Again, Kap is, as of this moment, still a free agent, precisely because he protested this shit. And he didn’t even make a big deal of it. Angry white people who need shit to be angry about shit made a big deal out of it.
Kap spoke with people in the actual military to figure out the proper way to protest, and it didn’t fucking matter. He has said that he wouldn’t kneel if he entered the NFL again. Didn’t fucking matter. They kicked him out of the league, and that one dude in your office won’t shut up about how he’s only out of the league because he sucks when Jarrett fuckin’ Stidham looks like he’s going to start for the Patriots and the Colts are gonna try to win games with the old quarterback the Chargers didn’t fucking want and the Giants have Colt “has never been good” McCoy backing up Daniel Jones. I could go on forever about the list of quarterbacks worse than Kaepernick. This is the league that dragged fucking Matt Moore out of exile to play football.
This is the league where Jameis Winston threw 30 INTs in 16 games, not to mention getting credibly accused of sexual assault on multiple fucking occasions, and he’s fucking employed. It’s the league where Ben Roethlisberger will probably go into the Hall of Fame despite whining about his fellow teammates on the radio and, oh yeah, getting credibly accused of sexual assault on multiple occasions. The league let shithead and UFC trash can Greg Hardy play actual football games for the Cowboys and only kicked him out when he wasn’t any good. The same league that made Ray Rice’s wife apologize for Ray Rice knocking her out. The same league where Josh Allen goes in the first round despite not being good and putting racist shit on his Twitter. The Patriots drafted a kicker who’s a white supremacist. The league is littered with examples of why Kaepernick’s continued exclusion from the NFL is absolute horseshit.
Like the cowards they are, the NFL quickly released a bunch of statements absolving them of any wrongdoing, helpfully reminding everyone that Kap is a free agent and is technically free to sign with any team.
Like most black people in America, Kaepernick is only technically free.
So what the fuck was Roger expecting? A fucking pat on the back? Did the owners want to receive some good PR? Did they want to stand opposite of Trump for once, who’s labeled protesters terrorists?
Well congrats, Roger; it didn’t fucking work. No one is that stupid. No one is fucking blind. No one has forgotten. You can try and set Kaepernick up to fall as much as you want. People’s memories are long when it comes to injustice, especially black people.
The only time Goodell should fix his mouth to speak out about inequality is when he goes on national television and issues an apology to Colin Kaepernick. When he admits that he was wrong, and the owners realize that they were wrong, and that they will no longer collude to keep him from gainful employment, and that he will now be actually free to sign with a team. Once Goodell addresses the league’s own discrimination problem, he can speak.
Until them, this ginger fuckboi should keep his motherfucking mouth shut, now and fucking forever.
“We agree with peaceful protests at this moment when we’re threatened by violent protests, but we reserve the right to disagree with peaceful protests once things calm down again.”
Yeah, I wonder why you haven’t heard much from active NFL players but the NBA guys are free to speak out. The NFL is about the interests of the owners. The NBA is about the interests of it’s teams & players have the power.

The NBA is legit one of the best case studies going when it comes to the power of organized labor. The league isn’t “better” than other businesses — right-wingers were fully correct to call it out for bowing to China the second revenue was on the line — but it cannot ignore its players’ power on issues like this. Plus it’s actually done some work in a way that the NFL would never. If Donald Sterling bought the Chargers instead of the Clippers, he would 100% still own a team.
I still don’t think the NFL players have even begun to fathom the actual power their union should have. Hiring De Smith is probably one of the worse moves the NFLPA ever did, and having mostly older, whiter players hold most of the negotiating power is the other one.
See also; the NFLPA basically eliminating the NFL’s middle class of solid dependable veterans after instituting a rookie salary cap, that was supposed to mean more money went to those veterans, but instead has only gone to the tippy-top earners while veterans are supplanted by rookies who cost only a fraction of what they do.
The players negotiating that rookie salary cap was the ultimate “congrats, you played yourself” moment.
By far the worst sports union in America. Plus, the league spends a lot of time/energy on making things about the league (and occasionally, the teams) but never, ever about the players. That’s helped by the size of rosters as well as helmets/armor vs. the openness of what’s on a basketball court.
Edit to add: I don’t want to go full racial conspiracy here, but it *definitely* matters that LeBron James is who he is in the NBA while the highest earners in the NFL are often white quarterbacks.
They also run the NBA more like an EU corporation which is what Elizabeth Warren is suggesting we require here. Employees have a seat at the table in supervisory boards or board of directors.

Butt butt butt butt…If one were to read about this on the r/spoRps subreddit, Kap being shunned has way more to do with his ‘lousy’ performance and agitating behind the scenes. Also he’s apparently a commie-socialist pinko because he wore a Che shirt one time.
But let’s just continue to ignore the reason he was kneeling and pretend everything is just fine…
🤬🤬🤬🤯
Then: Protest peacefully by kneeling during the national anthem only to be told “NoT LiKE ThAT”
Now: Violent protests break out across the country “yOu ShOUlD ProTesT peAceFUlly”
…meg’s comment made me think of something & I figured out the link I ought to have put in under the image of that mural the other day was this one…so along with correcting ito this seemed like another appropriate spot for it
All Colin did was politely and quietly ask the cops to stop killing black men and they (cops, NFL, a certain segment of sprots fans) didn’t fucking listen. Now they have to face the sadness, rage and pent up frustration come boiling out.
/points at the assholes who bitched about Colin/
YOU shitheads want an NFL season? Good luck with that.
Do you think any coach or player in the NFL could say this and keep his job?

re: kaepernick’s workout
this dave zirin interview explained how insane the whole thing was. if I understood correctly, the waiver they wanted him to sign would indemnify the team offering him a him a job against any future lawsuits by him!
