Visiting Iceland you will quickly learn the word for waterfall is “foss”. They are everywhere! Some are open to the public but you pay to park (they have cameras that film you going in and out so you NEED to pay via a phone app), some are on people’s property that you can’t get to and some are just open to hike to for free. We only did the south part of the island which was more than enough to fill a week & get our fill of waterfalls. The first one we did was on the day we got there after flying overnight and not getting much sleep. Way too much driving but we were too early to check in to our hotel anyways. This was one of the busiest and most touristy called Gullfoss (Golden Falls).

One of the coolest ones was Seljalandsfoss which is impossible to miss as it is clearly visible from the road. The unique thing about this one is that you can hike behind it for some very spectacular views.

The park where this waterfall is located has a few smaller ones around it including one in a very tight canyon that you need to wait for people to come out of to go in. You have to step from rock to rock if you don’t want to get thigh high in the water.

Not sure it was worth the wait but it was pretty cool & gave me a chance to use my fisheye lens to get the entire falls.

One of the other most popular falls is Skogafoss. Easily accessable & besides walking right up to it you can hike to the top of it and look down from a platform.

While I loved all these falls, I am not a fan of crowds so getting photos without a crowd was a challenge. I really enjoyed some of the smaller falls that were just off the road. They highly discourage just stopping on the side of the road so you need to be mindful of finding legal turnouts though sometimes you would have no cars around you and can just stop quickly.

In one small town we found a short little hike that took you to the top of a very cool waterfall with no crowds and free parking!

This guy was a little intimidated by the drop, my wife laughed at me as I crawled to that ledge to get a picture looking straight down the falls.

Probably my favorite of all the “foss” was a little hidden one in a valley behind a little inn & restaurant. It was probably a 10min hike and we got there before too many others.

This one also had a little trail to hike behind it for a really cool perspective.

I am still going through all my Iceland pictures so will spread out these posts. You’ll have to make it through a few of these to get to the Aurora pics.
Excellent photos.
I would be rather uncomfortable too taking pictures straight down.
Iceland is one of the places I would like to visit.
It is a very cool country & I would definitely recommend renting a car & not staying in one place as a base but keep moving. The weather is completely unpredictable so having clothes for any weather is a key.
Like Newfoundland (the place where all four seasons happen at once.)
That’s so beautiful.
I can understand being careful close to the edge. With all of that moss it must be hard to know how stable to rock would be given all of the freeze-thaw cycles going on.
Where are all the swimmers? That water looks so inviting.
There were places with warm waterfalls from the hot springs but all these were from melting glaciers. That one canyon fall had a crazy dude that was in shorts w/ no shirt. Looked like an out of shape Aquaman.
I wonder how many problems they have like Yellowstone where some dumb tourist decides to take a dip in a warm spring that turns out to be hot enough to cook eggs.
They have signs all over in multiple languages with the temps of the pools and warnings of sneaker waves and cliffs. It is definitely a dangerous place & if you do something stupid, most likely nobody will be able to help you. We went to the beach this video was filmed at & it had 10ft waves with an incoming tide & people are fucking around right near the tide line. I told my wife I couldn’t stay there long, it was stressing me out too much. I’ve had to save tourists in Hawaii fucking around and finding out but I didn’t want to risk my life trying to save one of these dumbasses & really didn’t want to sit there and watch one die and not do anything.
brb…. moving to iceland
Iceland is so amazing. Thanks for the great photos.
Oh wow, thanks for sharing!
