Iceland: Norðurljós

Aurora

I was saving these pictures for the last of my Iceland series but I think we could all use a distraction today. My wife took the cover picture of me with her cell phone, the rest of these were from my camera on a long exposure. It was a full moon so I didn’t expect it to be as amazing as it was.

We were staying at a hostel in Vik & my wife woke me up around midnight after a long day of driving and sightseeing. I didn’t think it would be worth it but grabbed my stuff and headed out. She was happy just to stay where we were but the light pollution made it not ideal so I told her we should drive a few miles out of town. We found a dark place near a ranch and pulled over for the show.

You can see the satellite pass through in a few of these images.

The red streak at the bottom of this picture is a car heading towards Vik. I hope this gave you a visual break & maybe an idea of a great place to get away from our current situation.

  1. Wow, those are great. Thanks.

I few weeks ago we had a rare chance of seeing auroras here despite the city lights, and I just missed it. By the time I noticed the photos people were posting on the local subreddit, they were gone.

  2. Just curious by the way, how was the Iceland experience in general?

How cool were the people, how was the food, and were the prices as high as you would expect for an island that can’t grow or make much?

Was there much to do besides the natural wonders?

    • We had a very good time.  The people spoke perfect English and were helpful but don’t really make small talk and are not overly friendly.  I had heard the food was not good but actually found lots of great food and around the same cost as you would expect in a big US city.  Reykjavik has great bars, restaurants and activities but once you get away from the city, not a whole lot of nightlife & food options get much more scarce.

      • Great! I don’t expect warm welcomes when I travel, I just hope people don’t laugh too much at my mistakes.

I know the population is small so it’s silly to expect every need of a spoiled tourist is met, so having some decent food and drink before going out to see an incredible country is all you can ask for.
