If you build it, they will come [NOT 16/10/23]

Hi, friends!

Tonight’s NOT was inspired by me reading an article today about how the University of Iowa did a women’s basketball exhibition game in their football stadium and it brought in 55k fans, almost double the previous record for college women’s basketball set during the 2002 NCAA championship game.

It reminded me of earlier this year when University of Nebraska used their football stadium for a women’s volleyball doubleheader and set the record for largest attendance at a women’s sporting event in the US (92k).

Sometimes you don’t know something can work until you try. If you told me a women’s college volleyball match could bring in that many attendees, I’d think you were on crack since the standard argument is “women’s sports don’t bring in fans like men’s sports do.”

So, friends, what sort of thing would you like to see on a larger scale? What “crazy” ideas have you seen tried that proved to be successful despite people being like umm that’s not how we do things?

  1. I’d like to see about 100X as much networked, dedicated bike/pedestrian paths. Sharing roads with drivers is just too crazy, and places where it happens see enormous growth in people using safe paths.

  2. All these suggestions so far would be great!  I’ll throw in high speed rail across the country.

  3. Three day weekends as the standard for everyone.

    Separation of church and State.

  4. i’d just like to move office hours to night shifts

i’m aware this would only be good for me and a few other night owls

but goddamnit….5 am is bed time….not waking up time

  5. – Truly strong labor unions

    – CEO pay reduced to “reasonable”

    – 5 weeks of vacation standard in the US

    – Trump’s ass in actual jail

    • That last one violates the laws against cruel and unusual punishment.

The other prisoners don’t deserve that.
