Immediately Unqualified [NOT 10/9/24]

Hi, friends!

Tonight’s theme is when you were talking to someone who was supposed to be the expert and they managed to completely undermine their expertise with you.

I’ll start.

A few years ago, I had to do active shooter training taught by a cop. Bucko starts with the usual instructions (run, hide, fight) and situational awareness (know where your exits are, etc). And then says that you know, you can’t really know who to look for as a suspect because anyone could be a mass shooter and there’s no real type or trend.

To which I was thinking my dude, white men, straight, history of domestic violence and/or alt-right forum involvement, aged 18-45. That’s like 95% of mass shooters.

Welp, guess you completely undermined your expertise.

The best part was a white male friend doing the training with me texted me after that comment and was like WTF how can he say there’s no types/trends???

  1. Any time someone talks to you like a child it’s a warning sign they’re not all they’re trying to project authority out of weakness.

If you’re trying to trip up someone like that, it doesn’t hurt to ask a really basic question that you know has a complicated answer, and when they act like there’s a stupid and obvious answer, you can spring what you know on them. Sort of the Columbo trap.

  2. I’ve had a bunch of those with people here trying to lecture me on Hawaii knowledge not knowing I was from there but my favorite involves my daughter.  Guy trying to share his knowledge on salmon that was totally wrong & I called him out & grabbed my daughter & told him what her previous jobs were as well as taking specific salmon classes.  His jaw just dropped when she just started spewing salmon science that contradicted his bs.  He actually took it very well but you could tell he just wanted to hide in a corner.  #neverprouder

  3. There was a “colour specialist” with whom I liked to communicate because he was always adamant that he MUST have the spectral reflectance data for every colour.  I fell out of touch with him for a bit.

In my younger years as a management consultant, primarily in the flexo printing industry at the time, I ended up with a gig in a huge print shop…with 13 wide web presses printing high quality line screens…to improve efficiency in every department and to hire and trasin a new operations manager for the entire facility.

The “colour specialist” turned out to be the ink department manager and I thought, “perfect! I will train him to be operations manager after I am done everything” until I observed the ink department and it’s lack of success for lack of better words

Needless to say but I didn’t end up promoting him and instead had him fired so he kicked a dent in my rental before he left. We were both assholes, I reckon.

Anyway, the first time I went to go over spectral reflectance data with him he asked me what 390, 400, 410, 420, etc. meant. To this day spectrophotometres can only read reflectance date in 10nm intervals.

He didn’t even know what I meant by, “nanometre.” It turned out that the company’s biggest client required proof via spectral reflectance data.

  4. It happened at the current place. I had a terrible internal interview for a job (lean project leader) mostly because the interviewer used it as a chance to dunk on me. Mocked me for the number of jobs I applied for. Bragged about how he got every job he interviewed for. I went because I wondered why the hell they wanted to interview me… Especially after I found out that the interviewer was a buddy of the director I hated the most. It was hands down the worst interview I ever had.

Fast forward six months later. I was sitting with about 300 production grunts listening to yet another presentation on McKinnsey’s bullshit version of Lean. The same guy who had dunked on me/bullshit interviewed me was now the Lean Director started going on a tirade about how shit we were and how all our key production indicators were garbage.

He said we need to blah blah blah improve blah efficiency blah by leveraging our skill blah blah sets.

I raised my hand while he was in mid tirade and pointed out that we actually did all that the first time but (unsaid current managment) let it slide. I also left unsaid that it was you dumb motherfuckers gutted all the stuff that made it work. I added Instead of reinventing the wheel we rebuild what worked the first time.

    He turned bright red.

The rest of the management team glared at me as he finished the rest of his presentation at about 90 decibels lower and with 99% less machismo.

    • He is out of his mind, but I can’t explain why nobody sees it. Except the press has been cleaning up his rally statements and not presenting them in their entirety.

      • I just saw this Washington Post headline:

Analysts say Trump faces risks heightened by gender when he debates Harris

I won’t say they’re speaking the same gobbledygook as Trump, but it’s definitely related dialects.

On another site I was just reading about the poor chimp Nim Chimpsky, named as a joke referring to the linguist Noam Chomsky. A scientist tried to teach him sign language. But they finally realized he couldn’t really use it, he just learned signs and shuffled them around until the scientists interpreted a random sequence as something meaningful and gave him a reward.

That Post headline isn’t English. It’s just a random shuffling of words close enough to English that someone rang a bell and signalled it was worth a cookie.

Who are they? Headline editors or chimps?

  5. Kamala needs to keep listing his criminal convictions and noting that he’s an adjudicated rapist. That sent him into a rage. I mean, he’s incoherent at the best of times, but he could barely speak after she hammered that home.

    • I was hoping she would actually do that. Good to know. I couldn’t watch but I heard Mrs Butcher laughing hysterically the whole time. When it was over she was covered in stress sweat from listening to that asshole for two hours.

  6. This. This right here is how you deal with that fuck.

“I was at the Capitol on January 6th. I was the vice president elect. I was also an acting senator. I was there,” Harris said. “And on that day, the president of the United States incited a violent mob to attack our nation’s capitol to desecrate our nation’s capitol on that day. A hundred and forty law enforcement officers were injured and some died. And understand, the former president has been indicted and impeached for exactly that reason.”

  7. Dunno if y’all have already seen this one, but if any of y’all ate Bon Iver fans, like much of the *Northern* Midwest?

    You might like it!😉

Also, just because I don’t thiiiink it’s been brought up yet *this* week, Minnesota *will* still be keeping Virginia’s Treason Rag, no matter *how many* times their Governors ask to have it back.

As Jesse famously said, “Why? It’s part of *our* ‘heritage’ now!”

"Die mad about it" energy from Jesse Ventura back in the day

  8. i question ikeas expertise….

(i also question the sanity of whomever writes their manuals)

but surely exploding drinks glasses should be a recall…. not a try not to be holding it incase it explodes psa
