Indigenous Peoples’ Day [NOT 9/10/23]

Hi, friends!

Today used to be Columbus Day, because yeah let’s honor the dude who found America except oh wait he actually landed in the Bahamas and never found the land the US is on.

Oh wait the first national recognition of it was in 1892 as a whoopsie apology for 11 Italian immigrants were murdered by a lynch mob.

Oh wait the decision to make it a recurring national holiday was in 1934 to celebrate the founding of America.

So now, FINALLY, it’s renamed Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Which is much better. Ponce de Leon didn’t get a national holiday and at least that dude managed to get to Florida.

Because even if Columbus had landed in what became the modern US, hey his exploration led to genocide and death and pestilence for Indigenous peoples.

On our morning local news, the newscaster couldn’t read correctly and called it Ingenious Peoples’ Day. Deep sigh.

    • I just listened to Thom Hartmann talking about a letter Columbus wrote to his friend about how great it was to rape 10 to 12 year old native girls & what a good fight they put up.  He then told of how raped women would perform their own abortions or commit suicide to get out of enslavement.  Really really fucked up history to celebrate!!!!

      • There was a level of gratuitousness to his cruelty which was at the extremes of his time. It really goes on beyond anything you can say about things being different back then, and of course it means completely ignoring what his victims thought.
