…irony [DOT 18/9/20]

n. - /ˈʌɪrəni/ - the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite

…yup…forget about the song…that’s what it means when something’s ironic…although there is a subsidiary meaning that’s worth bearing in mind, too

a literary technique, originally used in Greek tragedy, by which the full significance of a character’s words or actions is clear to the audience or reader although unknown to the character.

…that’ll be your tragic irony, see?

…so…with that in mind…along with maybe that link Loveshaq dropped off yesterday (https://www.ratfuckingthecourts.com) THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE…WHAT THE FUCK ELSE DO WE CALL THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE?

President Trump pressed his case Thursday that U.S. schools are indoctrinating children with a left-wing agenda hostile to the nation’s Founding Fathers, describing efforts to educate students about racism and slavery as an insult to the nation’s lofty founding principles.

Trump, speaking before original copies of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence at the National Archives, characterized demonstrations against racial injustice as “left-wing rioting and mayhem” that “are the direct result of decades of left-wing indoctrination in our schools. It’s gone on far too long.”
[…]
“Patriotic moms and dads are going to demand that their children are no longer fed hateful lies about this country,” he said. “American parents are not going to accept indoctrination in our schools, cancel culture at work, or the repression of traditional faith, culture and values in the public square. Not anymore.”

A heavily criticized recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last month about who should be tested for the coronavirus was not written by C.D.C. scientists and was posted to the agency’s website despite their serious objections, according to several people familiar with the matter as well as internal documents obtained by The New York Times.

Lev Parnas, the Soviet-born businessman who teamed up with Rudolph W. Giuliani to collect damaging information on President Trump’s political rivals, faced new federal charges Thursday that he duped investors in a company he founded that ostensibly protected consumers against fraud.

President Trump’s luxury properties have charged the U.S. government more than $1.1 million in private transactions since Trump took office — including for room rentals at his Bedminster, N.J., club this spring while it was closed for the coronavirus pandemic, new documents show.

The documents, including receipts and invoices from Trump’s businesses, were released by the Secret Service after The Washington Post filed a public-records lawsuit. They added $188,000 in previously unknown charges to The Post’s running total of payments to Trump’s properties related to the presence of Secret Service agents.

At issue was a Tuesday segment that the host allowed to drift out of control. A guest on the program, Chinese virologist Li-Meng Yan, claimed that China had created SARS-CoV-2 — the coronavirus that causes covid-19 — to wreak “damage,” a striking conclusion that had already met with a great deal of scientific refutation. Carlson appeared taken aback by the claim: “What you’re alleging is shocking — more even than I anticipated when we invited you on,” said Carlson.

As the discussion wound down, Carlson confessed to Yan that he lacked the “grounding” to properly explore her findings. Though he refrained from endorsing her claims, he sure did wink at them. “You know, it’s hard to be shocked in a moment like this, but you’ve succeeded in shocking me,” he said.

The upshot? Carlson couldn’t vouch for the incendiary words of a guest that he’d invited to appear on his show. Yet, when Facebook looked at the same material, and reached a similar conclusion — well, that was an outrage worthy of a stern and crinkle-lipped Tucker Carlson tirade. “Facebook suppressed the video, presumably on behalf of the Chinese government,” Carlson ranted, without supplying evidence. “Facebook executives made it harder for users to watch our segment.” (Facebook provided links to earlier fact-checks on the topic).

  1. I’m seriously pissed about the ruling against letting former offenders vote in Florida. It’s been a torturous journey, with the Republicans funding their defense with taxpayer money, while the organizations filing suit are paying their own way. So the Republicans basically are forcing the people who voted this into law into paying to have it all undone.

The end of the article talks about a billionaire (Bloomberg?) paying fines and fees for felons. My wife and I had talked already about paying off someone’s fees, but we haven’t researched it and don’t know how to find one. I assume the person featured in the article will get his paid, simply because people will see it and step up. I wish someone would set up a crowdfund that could be vetted and proven legitimate. I’d donate.

  2. Thanks to the premier pushing ahead with plans to send kids back to school and infect their parents/teachers/etc, I’ve decided to be a bit of a prepper just in case things go sideways.

Unlike morons who end up stocking up on guns, ammo and MREs, I’ve bought toilet paper I like and some chicken broth (but not hoarding) but it just happened to coincide with sales (limit 4 per customer) so why not?

Also chopped up some fresh celery, carrots and onions into two bags of Mirepox and placed in the freezer for soup later in the year.

Going to the mall today and getting some T-shirts and shoes.  And probably get a hair cut from a professional instead of from myself.

Also moving some furniture around just in case my friend with cancer is going to stay longer than a few days.

    • It’s a good idea. My wife has started our toilet paper stockpile for the exact same reason. I think we red-staters (God, I hate thinking of myself that way) won’t ever go back into lockdown, but if other states do, it’s going to create shortages again.

  3. not sure it quite counts as irony
anyhoo..my daughters away for the weekend and as i’d be at work when she left i told her to make sure to go out the back and lock up behind her (the front door tends to catch on the latch and not lock when you shut it so i was pretty sure i’d come home to a wide open front door if she went out that way as she just slams it shut and doesnt check)
anyways..she did actually go out the back and lock up behind her (im shocked)
somehow shes taken both back door keys and now i cant unlock it….
i did not see that one coming
spent most of me afternoon so far explaining to the cats that i cant open that door….they dont seem to be getting it

    • …I read a bit about that the other day, though from a different source, I think

…given that viking was something they did rather than the name of “a people” I guess I always figured it was going to have a hard time meaning what some folks want it to…but those folks aren’t particularly interested in accuracy so my guess is they won’t learn as much from this as they could?
