It’s a Dog’s Life [DOT 8/8/23]

At my house, this is a good thing . . .

Ruthie, Bill, Bruce, and Lillian

As always, it is up to you bright lights to bring the current events, politics, and weighty matters we should consider. I’ll bring the dogs, thank you very much.

In the last 30 years we’ve had Angelamia, Thelma, Louise, Olivia, Zoe, Frankie, Emma, Violet, Bruce, Bill, Lillian, and Ruthie. We adopt the elderly, the abused, the ill, and the puppy mill survivors, so even with superior care not all live for many years. But I ensure that once they are in our home they have love, comfort, medical care, treats, and appropriate food. Because I work from home the transition is pretty seamless, except that some of them do not react well when I – very occasionally – leave the house (I’m looking at you, Lillian Sweetheart).

Please tell us about your dogs, cats, turtles, fish, ferrets – whatever you have.

Not a pet person? Not a problem – tell us about whatever is on your mind. This is an all-inclusive DOT.

Wishing you a happy Tuesday!

  1. We shipped off the latest foster a couple of weeks ago, and so far it looks like the adoption is sticking. Our permanent dog is relieved. The foster was friendly, but only a year old and a girl like our dog, and she really prefers older boy fosters who just leave her alone.

  2. Here’s an absolutely infuriating story about how Andrew Cuomo enlisted his sister Madeline Cuomo to funnel information to people who attacked women online who exposed Cuomo’s assaults.

Madeline Cuomo organized and drove the group:

By last August, Ms. Cuomo had refocused on her brother’s accusers, sometimes sending dozens of texts and voice memos a day with marching orders that veered beyond fact-based defenses.

“KH and LB need to be frightened into shutting up right now — Enough is enough,” she wrote in August….

The uptick in activity seemed tied as much to Mr. Cuomo’s evolving career prospects as to the lawsuit brought by Ms. Bennett. Ms. Cuomo told Ms. Behan that he would soon be launching a new podcast, and his accusers “need to know now that they can’t be attacking when he comes out.”

It’s a fantastically detailed article by the Times’ Metro section reporter Nicholas Fandos. The article notes how this kind of intense, hostile family defensiveness has characterized the Cuomos forever. And it’s also worth noting that that when now Times #2 editor Carolyn Ryan was in charge of the Metro section, she openly wrote off there being anything interesting about Cuomo.

  3. Abortion is on the ballot today in Ohio. No, it’s not called that, but it’s on the ballot.

Turnout, polling, and spending all point to loss for GOP effort to rig Ohio’s ballot measure rules

Republicans are trying to sneak through a special election to raise the required threshold to amend Ohio’s constitution from a simple majority to 60%. Plus add a much larger signature requirement.

The reason is that Ohioans have successfully put an amendment to guarantee the right to abortion on the ballot, which will be voted on later. If Republicans could get this passed, they would scuttle that amendment. So they snuck a special election into the lowest turnout point of summer, gambling that their old white constituents would be the only ones at the polls.

It would appear they were mistaken. We’ll know for sure tonight.

  4. If you haven’t seen the Battle  of Montgomery  video you need to watch it. A group of drunken white boaters fucked around and found out. There are other videos out there too from different angles. And with so much going on you need to watch it multiple times and focus on one section at a time. My favorite part is the three Black dudes in V formation with what looks like choreography straight out of West Side Story.

    • It was all over IG yesterday and kept getting flagged and taken down for “inciting violence”. When really it is a video that celebrates Black lives and the comment section was hilarious and full of pride and unity. The hat signal and folding chair memes are perfection and will live online forever even if the video doesn’t.

      Some key takeaways:

Historically the location of the video is where enslaved people were held in a warehouse and auctioned off.

There are calls to make August 5th a national holiday. Maybe it will progress along the lines of Juneteenth.

If there hadn’t been any intervention, this could have ended up being another lynching video. There are plenty of those to be found on IG and they don’t get flagged and taken down.

      • We all saw who started the violence. The only reason white people are crying about it now is because it didn’t go the way they thought it would, lol. I have no sympathy for the instigators. Not even the older woman who got hit with the chair. Granny thought she was still living on the plantation where she could hit and kick Black people, and her white skin would protect her from an ass-whooping.

    • Goddamn. Those idiot boat people are like big pickup truck people who feel they’re entitled to double park or park in a handicapped space (probably the same people.)

      Hate them instinctually.

The white kid/coworker tried but he looked like this was his first brawl. Also who wants to grab a sweaty shirtless redneck?

  5. For another example of awful baseball owners:

I clicked on the clip expecting the announcer to be dropping F bombs or something.

Nope, he was suspended simply for a very mild reference to how the Orioles had struggled against the Rays in previous seasons but were 3-2 this year. Basically blink and you miss it stuff, delivered in a non confrontational tone.

  6. SPROTS:

Orioles broadcaster apparently removed for unflattering stats on team

Hard to believe there are accredited sports management/administration programs in major universities, and yet so many teams find it so hard not to shoot themselves in the genitalia.

“Let me just say one thing to Baltimore Orioles management – you draped yourself in humiliation when you fired [broadcaster] Jon Miller, and you’re doing it again,” [Mets broadcaster Gary] Cohen said on SNY. “And if you don’t want Kevin Brown, there are 29 other teams who do.

“It’s a horrendous decision by the Orioles. I don’t know what they were [thinking]. But they got exactly the reaction that they deserve. It’s just a shame because the Orioles are playing so well, and now they’ve diverted attention from that and now made themselves a laughing stock.”

ETA: @bluedogcollar beat me to it.
