It’s Almost Halloween! [NOT 28/10/24]

Hi, friends!

It’s almost Halloween – do you do anything? Decorate the house? Dress up and give out candy? Spend the month watching horror movies?

I have friends who love the holiday and make their houses look super cool. I am too lazy to decorate. And also I don’t want to store extra holiday decorations.

My neighbors and I do hand out candy and glow necklaces, and we’ll have a good time outside that night. But that’s about it for us.

  1. Our block is having its annual pre-trick or treating Halloween party. I doubt I’ll dress up but I’ll dig up a funny hat of some kind. I put up some Halloween decorations, but not as many as when the kids were around.

    • The block party sounds fun! When I was a kid the corner of the subdivision I was in had a block party on Halloween. I think a lot of it was because it was easier for the parents to watch us that way while not having to constantly open the door to other kids making the rounds.

  2. My subdivision is full of fundies so I don’t get many kids anymore.

I’ll probably pick up a box of candy bars tomorrow after work in the off chance I get some kids showing up. The forecast calls for a warm day, but calls for a lot of rain so I might get one or two kids crazy enough to show up for Halloween.

      • You could always dress the kid up as a doctor or dog or something else non-magical and use it as an opportunity to teach that supernatural things aren’t real.

I guess the deal though is that fundies actually believe way more than mainstream religious people and seculars that witches and vampires are everywhere.

    • Vegetables decorated stores and other public places downtown.

In 1892, a group of boys braved the rain to scatter cabbages, beets and other vegetables indiscriminately around town.

      Those monsters! Lock them up!

      • Thanks! Drawing on and cutting felt by hand made me wish I had a circuit cutter. But then I would have to learn how to draw on a tablet or computer program. So nah. The mask was the last thing I made and part of my Korok costume, so it’s what I put the least amount of effort into 🙃

I’m also manning a Halloween booth at my kids’ school fair. I decided to make a Pin the spider on the web game. I painted a spooky window scene that I’ll put fake cobwebs on. Everyone who participates gets a spider ring and some Nerds (which are my favorite candy). I just need to figure out how to get the large cardboards to stand. Maybe I’ll hang them on the wall with heavy duty duct tape or make perpendicular legs and stand them up.

        • I actually have a Silhouette cutter that I bought on sale. I use it about once or twice a year to make silkscreens for T Shirts, and I’m not sure it was a good use of money, but it’s definitely a lot easier than cutting stencils with an X-acto Knife.

The user interface is a pain. I have to relearn it every time I use it.

  3. I buy 2 bags of my favorite candy fun sized bars, then I try not eat them all before Halloween.  Then I remember we get no trick or treaters & eat the whole bag.

  4. still no halloween here…..but 2 weeks from now i get singing kids…

why cant we be like everywhere else?
