Ashton Pittman (@ashtonpittman.bsky.social) 2026-05-09T20:21:38.375Z

This article is dated December 31, 2014, a full six months before Trump rode down that escalator. https://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/01/us/politics/much-of-david-dukes-91-campaign-is-now-in-louisiana-mainstream.html

Quite a quote from this 1990 article. https://bsky.app/profile/sethcotlar.bsky.social/post/3kfq6r6jtwy2e

It caused the Lee Atwater-led Republican Party some embarrassment in January 1990 when it was revealed that several neo-Nazis were attending the Louisiana GOP convention as official delegates. “Old American Nazis don’t fade away. They just follow David Duke into the Republican Party.”

Thirty years earlier, in 1960, one of those LA GOP delegates, James K. Warner, was a young acolyte of George Lincoln Rockwell’s. He was exposed for grooming teenage boys in Florida to join the Nazi movement.

This is the article that appeared right below that story in the July 16, 1960 Fort Lauderdale News. It’s about how a leader in the FL GOP thinks the Democratic Party is becoming a tyrannical force by embracing civil rights, thereby “destroying the freedom of the majority.”

…oh…say…can you seeeeeee

One of the more frustrating parts of being a US voter since 1988 is that the people who vote for Klansman and Nazi David Duke but say they absolutely don’t endorse the Klan or Nazis, will then call everyone to their left a Communist for voting for someone who wants to expand healthcare access.

“Sure, I voted for the guy who was a Nazi uniform wearing Klansman, but how dare you call me a Nazi or a racist!!! You, on the other hand voted for someone who wants to strengthen laws that protect the environment and workers’ rights, so obviously you want to put me in a Stalinist gulag.”

I lived in Louisiana for many years. Those sentiments — protecting the environment, protecting workers — are called “communism” in Louisiana (an Mississippi, and Alabama, etc.). I wish I were joking. I wish this was hyperbole; I assure you, it’s not.

I’m completely with you. In Crossett, AR and the GP mill has a smell. I’m in line at the Taco Bell next to the plant; another customer says, “It really stinks here.” GP worker in front of her turned and said, “It’s the scent of money.” To be fair, I heard that at the Richmond, CA refineries too.

The idea of “overturning” or “repealing” the 14th Amendment was a pretty fringe proposition until recently, but it wasn’t unheard of. Obviously the former Confederates wanted to do that. But it was also a white nationalist talking point in the Cold War era. This is 1988.

1/ Tear gas was created to incapacitate grown men.So when I started seeing reports of kids hurt by tear gas deployed by federal immigration agents, I wondered how often it was happening. My colleagues and I started to count:

Lisa Song (@lisalsong.bsky.social) 2026-05-09T14:37:27.415Z

2/ We found at least 79 children hurt by tear gas or pepper spray during Trump’s deportation blitz. It’s likely a vast underestimate.Kids were at home, sitting in strollers or attending a daytime protest with their parents. Then, chemicals left them gasping for air.

Lisa Song (@lisalsong.bsky.social) 2026-05-09T14:37:27.416Z

3/ Videos show how immigration agents have used these weapons: at one point, officers hurl tear gas canisters at protesters without apparent provocation. Then, with the street flooded in white smoke, a CBP agent shoots pepper balls before muttering “Fuck yeah,” and “Woo!”

Lisa Song (@lisalsong.bsky.social) 2026-05-09T14:37:27.417Z

4/ Another officer fired pepper spray through a car window, hitting a 1-year-old girl in the back seat. A bystander filmed her in tears. DHS called the incident a “hoax.” But, as a local pastor at the scene testified later, “there’s literally video evidence.”

Lisa Song (@lisalsong.bsky.social) 2026-05-09T14:37:27.418Z

6/ These weapons are especially toxic to children, who breathe more rapidly than adults, pulling in more contaminated air relative to their body weight. There are no studies of long-term effects on kids, but studies on adults show lingering eye issues and respiratory illnesses.

Lisa Song (@lisalsong.bsky.social) 2026-05-09T14:37:27.420Z

9/ Judges have said ICE and CBP officers used excessive force and ordered agents to limit the use of these weapons. But they had no power to curb the practice nationwide, and kids in other communities continued to get hurt. (Appellate courts later overturned these decisions.)

Lisa Song (@lisalsong.bsky.social) 2026-05-09T14:37:27.423Z

please, there is no buzz. this article is about a tweet. rubio said some word salad at a lectern and someone put weirdly ominous music over it and elon musk retweeted it. you can’t use a video ‘going viral’ as evidence of anything when the site’s owner is the one promoting the content!

doing some fact checking here – the video scavino posted does have 28k likes but it doesn’t show rubio deejaying a wedding so much as it shows him standing awkwardly behind a DJ trying to work until that guy moves a little so marco can get his picture taken looking like a DJ

ok sorry, last thought on this. it’s sad and weird that wapo is relying on tweets for their news before they write news for us and very upsetting that they think we need to hear from rod dreher, but it is still extremely funny that rod dreher is quoted here being a very fake friend to JD vance.

the funniest part of elon’s fake gamer persona is if he simply went the opposite route of paying ppl to pretend he’s a savant at them and embraced being the billionaire who loves games and sucks ass at playing them he wouldn’t actually need bots to appreciate his gamer persona

but this of course would require a skill from elon that he is simply incapable of- understanding how human beings think and are wired

Elon paying a pro to pretend he's top tier at a video game when he streams is like sneaking in Adele to sing for you at your work's kareoke night. Not only is it not fucking believable that you've somehow perfected a lifetime's craft in your spare moments, but you've misunderstood what's fun!

Dmitry Grozoubinski (@explaintrade.com) 2026-05-09T08:14:18.013Z

If you're not a gamer you may not realize this, but (without getting into sports vs games) being in the top 100 at basically any commercially succesful game requires thousands of hours. Thousands. You are competing with literally millions of people where 0.1% differences in performance matter.

Discourse about finding “the Rogan of the Left” or “the liberal answer to Fox News” rarely accounts for the reality that the entire conservative media universe is the enormously unprofitable vanity project of a few rich sociopaths. It “succeeds” because they don’t care how much it costs.

the funniest thing about rod dreher is that his entire career has been this way. he has always been the private project of a single reactionary ghoul who can afford to subject the entire world to what should’ve been the inner monologue of a very cruel, stupid man.

Hungarian taxpayers paid American “post-liberal” Rod Dreher $105,000 last year to produce propaganda for Orban’s regime. https://www.jaccusepaper.co.uk/p/the-strange-death-of-orbanism

I still think we’re either in for an extremely grim time if we’re just suck in a thermostatic enshitification ratchet until something in the US fundamentally breaks or there is a realignment of the electorate that creates a stable constitutionalist majority for like a decade

i do think the electorate (or rather a critical mass of the electorate) can have a fundamental change in preferences that realigns elections but like we have definitely lost those mass member organizations that used to do the political socialization that made that possible now its a free for all

also just Really Not A Fan of knowing that the base political stability i have taken for granted my entire life, that everyone in my family and around me has taken for granted, is definitely under a lot of strain in a way it hasn’t for a very long time

Of course, this also begs “why now” cus its not like we’re in the winter of 1933 when material conditions were truly apocalyptic for the vast majority of people

And the bull arg for the latter case is that everything is now negative/affective polarization and this administration will be traumatic enough to negatively polarize a critical mass of the electorate against the GOP which will inevitably socialize those voters into generic democrats

every former republican I know is the most radicalized person I’ve met. I don’t suspect that changes ever

…your illegal pharmacologica is generally not without some risks & side effects…when it *is* the thing…but…economics are all about optimising your risk:reward…& at the more-illegal end of your illicit drugs…moving *the thing* is up there risk-wise…at the sharp end somewhere down-pyramid from the sort of people for whom the physical stacks of cash literally eaten by rats accounts for more on an annual basis than I think I maybe expect to ever earn if I *don’t* retire…but still…a little bit gets you in a lot of years’ worth of trouble & “weight” is “serious time”…so…on one side of your dodgy scales you got the least risk you can get away with being exposed to & however much pure product that shakes out to…but…if you can do like it do when you crack cocaine…now we cooking junkies on gas…or…something…point is you make a lot more money of the same seed stock

…some places…maybe farscy could tell me if I’m wrong but pretty sure amsterdam was at least one of ’em…went about it by offering a service in the nightclub itself where…without risk of punishment like it’s all wrapped in a pre-pled 5th or something…you could give them your drugs to test & they’d tell you what you really had before you necked X hits of X-only-maybe-stands-for-MDMA…only for basically anything…&…lotta overlap in those results?

…like…you’d get things sold “as”…say…super-strength ecstasy but for “a discount when you think about it on account of each one is, like, two…maybe two-&-a-half…my mate had a couple last night & he danced ‘is way ‘ome to the sounds of the milk-float…you’ll probably see ‘im in ‘ere later…scouse lad in an everton hat…can’t miss ‘im…anyway…how many’d’y’wantthen?

…put that through one of those tests & maybe you get…heroin mixed with crushed glass…let’s see…thirty or more years ago…the fentanyl thing…to the extent I understand it…is kind of the flip…it’s the…pulp fiction bit…only instead of snorting heroin when you thought it was cocaine & OD-ing that way…you’d need to step on it several times over to bring it down to the level of heroin if you mistook it for that…roughly speaking?

…hence the part where instead of the adrenaline shot to the heart like the movie…opioid OD gets that narcan thing…which kind of walls off the receptors so the O can’t turn into the D part…only…if you OD on the fentanyl…when the narcan dose wears off…the residual D can still be OTT the really bad way

…thus it’s the drug trade equivalent of the urban legend that wasn’t as divorced from reality as it needed to be to be comfortable with about people wedging razor blades on the inside of the flume on slides at public waterparks…oh…I dunno…that one’s probably an 80s callback, I expect…it’s the bogeyman’s bogeyman, basically

…so…& again I am significantly less well informed about the current reality of this stuff than people I ran into pretty regularly when I was younger & could at least pass for less-boring were about it then…so…this is not akala talking…or that manchester lad that can’t spell bugsy “proper”…or…whateverz…but the way it seems to be from what I gathered is that the two sides of the pond stand a bit different on the fentanyl problem

…it’s not that it isn’t a problem…same as other opioids…well…not the same but the same way plenty of europe &/or the UK has plenty of places with plenty of people who are in the market for those one way or another in this that or the other combination or permutation…but…it’s also not The Fentanyl Problem™ the way…AIDS+crack+hip-hop was gonna getcha after satan’s finest heavy metal hadn’t after you survived the sinful swivel of white-bred rock&roll after…not exactly sure what today’s model for that would be?

…I think it’s “the internet”…which is worse than dying of drugs…because it might turn your pronouns funny & that upsets the delicate balance of the natural order of people who get the most bent out of shape about thinking they fancy a bit of something that turns out to be a switch-hitter…or a non-participant…puts them right off their feed, in fact…they made a movie…called it “the crying game” iirc…but…it always looks better with a hollywood gloss than it did on jerry springer…&…by box office…natch…guess the crying game was highbrow

…that…or…like…*way* more people are way more high *all the time* than I’ve been assuming lo, these many years

      • yeah we still have the get your pills tested booths here..usually they are police affiliated and they arent always present.. but generally there will be one around for big events at least

    • recreational use of fentanyl is pretty limited here…but the police is worried about it potentially getting cut into other drugs.. they are on hightened alert for it like

    • …I dunno…I bitch about a lotta whiny little bitches a lot & it’s easy to lose track

…I…think I had a few rants that transected this already…certainly referenced a few folks who had some opinions about it…pretty sure I didn’t run through all them bullet point for wall’o’text…but…there might have been a post with a quote/post…with a link…to a podcast…that…did that…for…upwards of an hour or so…I forget…might have listened to more than one of those…not important…let’s see…how to put this?

…ok…I think I got one…you know the way people sometimes talk about someone having “a punchable face”…like…oh…I dunno…richard spencer…or…jacob rees-mogg, say…& can I just say thank fuck that isn’t what mogging turned out to mean…anyway…back when…I dunno…people though tony blair was “cool britania” & shit…& I’d never seen so much as a picture of the guy & wouldn’t have remembered even if I had heard his name

…I never thought I’d think of peter thiel as the picture in the text book under “punchable face” the way it turns out I sort of assume at some point history is going to rule on that

…like…more punchable than rees-mogg *&* nige…which…I mean even that karp might be a rotten enough head of the fish to tip those scales…depends on the size of your sample set, I guess…I mean…training data…but…thiel…boy, I dunno…dude has some…issues…likes to front like he’s hulk hogan, too

…not sure what he’s on, exactly…but…you know…if a punchable face should turn out to correlate to the glass jaw phenomenon

…ever seen what it looks like when you hit crazy-reinforced whatever-the-fuck-proof “glass” *just* right in one particular spot that didn’t look any different to the rest of the impervious see-through armour…& it just…splinters *&* shatters…like…falls apart & doesn’t even fling shrapnel everywhere?

…be pretty neat if…his whole deal…kinda…worked that way

…dunno how you do that in minecraft, exactly…because…I’m too old for this shit

…just don’t anyone say how close to retirement I am…I’m trying to see tomorrow over here…not tempt fate with reckless abandon like I haven’t a care in the world & even less to lose

…besides…tomorrow’s…monday…cut me some slack…today’s the day you’re *supposed* to talk to people that aren’t there & expect them to not tell you what to do…that’s what it’s…like…for & shit…akshully

…ok…yeah…gonna need to remember it’s important to *sound* sober once it’s monday…or…I might spook a market & doom my own grandfather & all the pictures on my insta will disappear & the candyman will…oh…why bother…there’s nothing left but insanity…we are all the joker…or the comedian…depending on the bit that’s you in the sphinx’s bit…joke’s on us either way…just a question of whether we’re in on it, apparently

…now, if you don’t mind I’ll be leaving the rest of you to go over the top without me…dashed nuisance & all…sorry to let the side down…but you see I’ve got these underpants on my head & pencils up my nose so clearly I’m quite mad & couldn’t possibly…out of my hands, you see…which…once they put the jacket on…&…you know…the ladders & the wire & such…you know how it is?

  3. …can we all just agree it might have been better if I’d just stayed in bed today…like…for science or something?

The progressive bloc in Congress, led by the same senator who is currently trying to block weapon sales to Israel, was the group responsible for rallying support for the first ever War Powers Resolution passed by both chambers of Congress— and it was about Saudi Arabia.

    The whininess is obscene.
screenshot of excerpt from article linked below with highlighted text asking if israel don't get weapons

There is real rising antisemitism in the US right now, including on the left, as even left-wing Jews will tell you. Meanwhile, this editorial spends most of its time complaining about Democrats voting to block weapon sales to Israel, which is not antisemitism. http://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/10/o...

Jews are not at fault for antisemitism, but mischaracterizing legitimate criticism of Israel as antisemitism actively hurts the fight against real antisemitism in the US right now, and we should say so.

…or…you know…bitch about AOC not being down with MTG the way marco rubio likes to bite bars so he can sound pretty fly for a nearly-white guy…sure…let’s do that instead…apparently that’s “cool”…cool…cool cool cool…cuckoo-coup-cool, even

…love being force-subscribed to this reality…really…it’s…super-cool…it’s…like…marco rubio cool how cool this is

…this must be what that marcomentum stuff feels like

…solid…&…dependable…always there for you…like that weight on your chest in those dreams where you can’t catch a…breath…you know…something you can really rely on in the bad times

…that…makes about as much sense as anything…sure…let’s go with that…that’s what “people” are “saying” now…so…yeah…that’s how it works now…because…apparently that’s how it works now…I don’t make the rules…nobody makes the rules…the only rule left is the exception that proves the rule that the exceptions are the rules & the rules are the exceptions you just gotta make exceptional allowances for when you’re the ruling party which is the party of every man for himself…so…I dunno…at some point there’s meant to be trumpets…&…possibly a fat lady sings…& they all go to heaven in the end but the one with the biggest pile left behind is the winner

…it’s…like cricket apparently…or…it just isn’t…or…it isn’t just…fuck knows…I’m old & crotchety & this is quavering territory by rights…that…may or may not prove to be divine when we get to the fine print about this life everlasting business in the warranty…so…hope I can find those receipts when I get to the head of the queue?

  4. …I see how this works now…it’s the ol’ “I’m not the one losing it you’re the one that’s out of your goddamn mind” one-two soft-soap-shoe-combo-buff-feint-projection-whatsit…you know…oh…everybody know…hush now

“We, the creators of the Torment Nexus, are now suing the writers of the classic science fiction novel ‘Don’t Create the Torment Nexus.’”

…you…leave that nice mr scalzi outta this…ya filthy animals

Big tech corporations have finally figured out who is to blame for their crappy products: science fiction writers.

screen shot of an anthropic social media post admitting to the nothing-charge that their training wasn't making it better but also not worse because claude only thought an AI blackmailing an exec was the probabilistic outcome of the prompt because there's such a large body of material they ripped off to make up the corpus the zombie bot thinks is all there is to not-really-know-as-such-but-have-had-access-to-in-some-form

Also that word “chose.” Only conscious, sentient beings with free will can choose. Claude is not the former and doesn’t possess the latter.

    …I dunno

call me…oscar…for I live in a dumpster-fire apparently & there’s gonna be a shitload of stuff about whales who mostly seem to be white before we get to the part with all the stabbing at thee from hell’s heart with the devil’s own harpoon or something like somebody thinks they hellboy or some shit

…there’ll…probably be like…kids that study this stuff one day, you know

…hope they make the drugs legal before that happens or it’s gonna get…weird?

  5. …in for a penny…at…ten a ha’penny…or…what’s that in dimes to the bakers’ dozen?

folks, the idea is out there. Virginia Democrats are talking about it. this could happen.

    screenshot but basically

this is the closest I’ve ever come to actually suggesting a “one neat trick” suggestion for anything, but I’m so serious here. the Virginia Constitution gives the legislature the power to set retirement ages for judges “REGARDLESS OF THE TERM TO WHICH ELECTED OR APPOINTED.” make it 54 right now.

…WTF do they list this shit as on the schedule…w/end market-play time?

    …actually…that one nearly works

  7. …ah yes…the wisdom of crowds(-ourcing?)

I guess I'm glad this is out there, but also I am infuriated that people have to spend their time doing this. OF COURSE synthetic text extruding machines are going to output something that *looks like* but is not an analysis. >>

"Based on the dataset you shared, US and UK responses differ mainly in tone, intensity, and wording style, even though they express similar emotional states"New post on what happened when I got Copilot to do some data analysis: kucharski.substack.com/p/real-signa…

    Adam Kucharski (@adamjkucharski.bsky.social) 2026-05-06T18:13:43.210Z

This is somewhat similar to the classic ML problem where a blackbox nnet or SVM learns a confounder – like this MMR is the one from the hospital for sick kids so this kid is sick. What happens if you give neutral labels like 1,2,3 or A,B,C? Does it still bullshit?

    McEnkidu (@mcenkidu.bsky.social) 2026-05-06T18:54:02.295Z

From what I can tell, it didn't look at the dataset at all – just responded based on the question and fact I'd said there was a dataset. But would be interesting to explore more, e.g. with a nonsense dataset uploaded alongside specific question.

    Adam Kucharski (@adamjkucharski.bsky.social) 2026-05-07T07:23:39.249Z

Based on a colleague who used copilot to calculate the mean for a plot (wrongly) I'm thinking of testing how good llm are at different types of metric (mean median as etc).

    McEnkidu (@mcenkidu.bsky.social) 2026-05-07T07:54:49.597Z

The big problem I found with this is that Microsoft have about 50 different copilot products that work differently and I'm not sure what was used.

    Once again…I am an accountant.
I reset the accuracy of every Excel spreadsheet I use because if I don’t, it will calculate 25 cells that have a .00 value as having a value of .01, instead of 0, for reasons I do not know.
AI does not belong in every field.

This is actually really fun, that’s called a floating point error. It’s an artifact that comes from it being hard to convert binary numbers into base-10 and back so that both the computer and people can read them. I’ve never seen that in a spreadsheet though

    Blake Erquiaga (@yourboiblake.bsky.social) 2026-05-10T12:11:01.928Z

It used to be much more common. Modern spreadsheet software corrects for it.
There were rumours of stealing the rounding error from interest from banks, which added up to a reasonable amount.

Pretty sure there was a movie where that was the plot.It was just such a quiet little bank robbery idea, who'd miss a few barely-existent micro-fractions of a cent?…Then millions of dollars hit their accounts because they didn't consider the sheer scale of the ENTIRE banking system.PANIC!

…only…it’s a 3year note on a trillion or two…& there’s…like…3 guys…& about .2 nuts to split between them…which…is why they get paid spend the really hyper-scaled bucks

    …so…that’s definitely going real…make-it-great?
