    • I was talking to a client in Vermont (!) after Hurricane Beryl and he was telling me about the flooding and damage. I was like, what are you even saying? It’s VERMONT. It’s all like mountains and all that.

      He patiently explained that Vermont doesn’t get hurricanes — well, DIDN’T get hurricanes — and the infrastructure was all built many decades ago. Drainage wasn’t emphasized, pipes are smaller, and people built stuff like power stations along picturesque little creeks that turn into raging torrents.

      We’re used to hurricanes here. We’ve got drainage and retention ponds and we keep important stuff far away from the ocean (for the most part). But hurricanes are starting to get bigger and go farther inland where people never expected hurricanes.

      • Yeah- I used to live in Wilmington, NC and didn’t evacuate during two big ones – Fran and Bertha – both 3’s. One of them I actually sat out on my front porch through a lot of it. I was closer to the Cape Fear River than the ocean – and it flooded but not anywhere close to where my house was. Now, I would definitely not take the chance and stay.

        I also remember doing a show in Wilmington in the mid 90’s and a hurricane was coming – so the producers evacuated all of the LA people to a hotel in Raleigh, NC – which is much further inland. They got flooded out of their hotel and we were fine.

        • I keep going through that explanation because people here are slightly bemused by all of it. Twelve inches of rain here is called Tuesday. Twelve inches in NC is a disaster.

          • 12 inches here in the GTA is a disaster. We got 5 inches worth last week and the parking lot at work turned into a lake. My management being the set in stone arseholes they are didn’t forsee the need for improved drainage or even the rise of EVs (no chargers and non planned unless an execubot gets an EV.)

            BTW this is the 4th time this summer our parking lot has flooded (at least 12″ deep in places), but the feckless shitheads don’t see that as a problem (because the ones that authorized this parking lot and approved it don’t park there.)

    • The amount of water that rolls through creekbeds is unbelievable.

      It used to be vastly better when beavers were around because their dams and the surrounding vegetation soaked up so much water.

      • Also a lot of areas turned creeks and streams into concrete culverts to “control” water flow in decades past which means it’s easy to flash flood and overflow since there’s no where to go when the volume gets higher and it’s channeled faster.

The irony of Swiftboating is that it turns what was considered a positive (military service) into a negative especially if that military service involved actual combat because accusations of stolen valor are hard to refute especially if your squadronmates turn out to be paid to say otherwise. It basically kneecapped John Kerry despite the fact W hid in the reserves (because of daddy’s connections and some Tejas version of Don Draper) defending the skies of Dallas at a time when the USAF needed jet fighter pilots due to the heavy losses over Route Pack 6 (Pentagon codename for Hanoi) and was so desperate for them that they grabbed anyone including reservists (volunteers only), transport pilots as well as Strategic Air Command bomber pilots (volunteers and the volunteered.) You’d think that someone with daddy issues like W would be willing enough to fly a F-105 Thud through the air defense hell of downtown (Hanoi) just to show daddy he’s brave too. Apparently wearing a uniform and flying an F-102 over Dallas was good enough for that.

    Betchya the GOPers wished they didn’t fight to keep women out of combat roles for several decades…

    The problem is that only a shit bird like Karl Rove would turn honorable service into a smelly shit stain proving Dark Helmet’s very funny but painfully truthful quote “So, Lone Starr, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb.”

    • He should have just moved things to the Four Seasons Garden Supply in Philadelphia where America’s mayor, Rudy Giuliani, delivered his Lenin-at-the-Finland-Station rousing address which—alright, that’s enough.

    Bloomberg’s headline was “Donald Trump sharpened his criticism on border security in a swing-state visit, playing up a political vulnerability for Kamala Harris”

    A huge reason is that they just crib off the prewritten writeup prepared by the Trump staff telling reporters he is “really” saying and what his “strategy” is.

    It’s standard operating procedure for campaigns to distribute these one pagers to reporters, and when reporters cover a normal person it’s not even terrible for the press to refer to them as a starting point.

    It’s utter malpractice when covering Trump.

    Meanwhile in what’s really happening in the state, former GOP Senator for Arizona Jeff Flake endorsed Harris.

    Detroit scored two in the fifth off Jared Shuster (2-5), which was good enough to clinch an American League Wild Card spot.     People came to Detroit from as far away as Cincinnati and ended up with an event where the only entertainment was a single violinist and a stripper. The only food was

    undercooked chicken wings, one meatball and some mashed potatoes, gravy and salad. Only two people appeared to be serving the group and guests had ridiculously long waits.

    This event and the Glasgow Willy Wonka show were promoted heavily online with slick, seemingly legit ads. It’s standard these days for fan events to be promoted this way since local media is so weak, and a lot of fan conventions and gatherings are legit.

    But it’s obviously incredibly easy to fake promos, and it’s going to get worse. Newspapers and TV try to be careful about the ads they run to avoid things like this blowing up on them. Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t care how much farther his reputation sinks. He doesn’t care that Trump has threatened to imprison him if he wins.

    • “Scientific” Racism is more like it. So much of what they push out is based on the incredibly shallow ability of reporters to evaluate what is reliable research. They also count on the media being unable to remember any of the history of these quacks. The field keeps promising “new” evidence which turns to be DOA, but none of that ever gets held against them.

    • I found out a few weeks back that our Waste Management collection here doesn’t recycle glass anymore.

      My municipality is paying for a glass recycling collection bin in a parking lot that anyone can use, but also, what the fuck is up with not recycling glass?

      Glass functionally is the easiest thing to recycle. People have been recycling glass for 2000 years.

  11. The religious thing for Gen Z is really interesting because like how did religious leaders not see that coming?

    When I was in college 20 years ago, it was definitely more women than men who were actively religious.

    They lost them. They lost the women because of the misogyny and sexism and hatred. This isn’t fixable long term for evangelical churches. Women are the ones that make the kids go to church. Women are the ones that volunteer for a fuckton of unpaid church labor.
