Just say no [NOT 15/11/22]

Hi, friends! I hope your day went well.

I’m having one of those weeks at work where I am pretty much saying some variation of no to people constantly.

My favorite is the two times this week I was asked for something and explained that someone else already on the email was responsible for that.

Are you good at telling people no? Or do you waffle on it? Or even worse – you’re good at it but your bosses don’t let you?

  1. I have trouble saying no to people I like but no problem with those I don’t.  My brother flew home this morning & we had a great time together.  He got all the oysters & Mexican food he wanted as well as enjoying the local bud-tenders, my buddy’s winery, & a few breweries.  We even spent yesterday doing some business so he can write his trip off.

  2. I’m getting better at it. I used to take on more than I could handle and resented people for it. I recently told someone no twice in several days. The favors asked for were pretty big and would have been extremely inconvenient for me. I was polite, explained my reasons, and offered other solutions.  But I suspect that he resents me for it. I don’t owe anyone my time or attention though and I’m not responsible for how someone feels about that.

  3. I don’t like to say No, but like Hannibal I went full on “good” person and got burned several times over the years because of it.

Now I say it with a smile especially coworkers who need a hand but I’m too damn busy myself.

Management tends to get the side eye and snarl.

I once snapped at a manager for overloading me with stupid pointless tasks and told him to fuck off. I dunno how I didn’t get fired, but he kept far away from me after that.

    • Yes, I want to be helpful but too many  people have taken advantage of that. I’ve said it before, I’m a slow learner. But once I get it, I’m done.

  4. I learned a long time ago if you just start asking questions people will say no themselves.

What do you want? When do you want it? How much will that cost? Who did you talk to about this? Can I ask them what they think? How much does that cost again? Does that number include this? Who’s doing that?…

  5. This commercial seems to be queer baiting but I’m too tired to address that aspect at the moment. Posting it because I find Daniel Craig hot in it which not something I’ve ever said about him. Am I the only one?

  6. One of my favorite children’s books illustrators, Gracey Zhang, won an award recently… The font on the award is killing me. Whoever made the call to mix upper and lower case letters is either out of touch with internet culture or trolling the recipient. Scroll to picture #8.

  7. I have no problems calling people idiots whether or not they work for me/pay me to consult them.

If an idea is stupid, which it usually is, take it up with the “project manager” who got the title because they passed the Microsoft Excel course.

    Project: “NO!”

    Responsibility: You

Goal: Fuck off because you’re an idiot with stupid ideas

    Timeline: Now

  8. I have a No on constant lock and load for my 8 year old son. Actually, it’s not hard at all for me to say no to my boys. Only a few people I do have trouble saying no to, my Dad being one.
