Today’s the Day
This year the city cut down the dead sugar maple in front of our house. It was in the little strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street, and when no replacement magically appeared, I decided to recycle the leftover spot on my own.
I bought a serviceberry tree, which is a native species that is supposed to have beautiful spring flowers, berries that birds love, and pretty fall foliage. The maple was beautiful in the fall, but I’m glad for the chance to reuse the space.
The day after Thanksgiving is a huge day for turning leftover food into something good, so let’s talk recycling, reusing, and remaking leftover things.
Reusing, Regifting, Repurposing
So how about you, Deadsplinterresplinterers? Have you emptied out a space and filled it with something new? Do you have refurbishing project, like stripping an old bookcase so you can restain it? Do you have a stash of old boxes waiting for holiday gift mailings?
Maybe you and your friends or family have a regifting agreement for the holidays, where nobody buys new things but instead exchanges things they already have. Or maybe this is the time you’re heavy into composting, and you’re piling up all of the fallen leaves and getting them ready to be returned to the soil in the spring.
And if you’re dealing with leftover food, do you do something that’s more than just zapping them in the microwave?
And if you have any old jokes you want to drop in here, or old songs that you want to share, feel free to make something of this space. Today’s the day!

A piece of rope wanted to enter a bar to get a drink, but saw there was a sign that said “No Ropes allowed”
The rope tries to enter and the bartender sez “Get out! No ropes allowed!!!”
The rope leaves and 20 minutes later enters the bar again.
The bartender yells again “Get out! NO ROPES ALLOWED!!!!”
The rope really wants a drink and tries something different. It tussles it’s top end till all the fibers all hanging loose.
The rope enters again and the bartender yells again “Get out!!! NO ropes allowed!!!”
The rope turns to the bartender. “Nope, I’m afraid not.”
I’m off to Whole Foods in half an hour or so, to go get some not-quite-recycled stuff😉
This is the third time I’m getting a bakery bag from the Too Good to Go app. It’s $6.99 for a bag of stuff from the bakery department. You don’t know exactly what it’ll be, but so far, each time I’ve gotten it, there are a few items of bread (usually brioche buns of some sort), a few desserts–Salted Caramel Brownies in both previous bags, and some cookies… usually it’s totaled $45-50.00 worth of bakery goods, for that 7-ish dollars.
I’m also trying one of the “Prepared Foods Bag”-those are $9.99, and more of a gamble, but it’s worth a shot once to see what you get.
And tomorrow, I’m picking up a sushi bag from one of the local sushi shops–the rice is typically a *squidge* dry, but it’s *at least* as good flavor-wise, as the sushi you get at the local grocery store sushi counters.
And it’s a great way to try rolls i wouldn’t typically buy, without feeling guilty about wasting money, because it’s only $6.99, for the lot (usually about 5 different packages of rolls😉).
The app is a great way to try restaurants and bakeries, because it’s inexpensive, *they* choose what you get (no decision-paralysis for me!😉😁), and if you realize you don’t like that place’s style of food, you aren’t out much at all!
And the other nice thing, is that–since I’m taking the bus there & back, I can *usually* find folks who will gladly take anything I *don’t* want, by the time i get home–so it *really* doesn’t go to waste!😉
That’s awesome!
It’s a pretty fun app, I’ll be honest!
The bakery bag tonight had a half dozen plain bagels, a package of 4 sweet rolls (look like scones?), 4 banana muffins & 4 pumpkin ones, a pack of 4 whole wheat pita, a package of 4 gluten-free bars (i forget the flavor), and another package of the sea-salt caramel brownies (i get the feeling most folks dislike those, for as often as I’ve gotten them–but i like em!😁
The prepared foods bag had 3 different types of deli-style salad-potato, chicken, snd a pastasalad, the a general Tso’s heat & eat meal and a turkey heat & eat meal–so not bad there, either.
The other one i forgot to mention was from a dessert place–which ended up being three pastries for $4.99.
I got a hot apple cider there, to drink on the way home, and that was *definitely* tasty & hit the spot😉
It’s also been a really fun way to get to know the city a bit better, too–because I’ve been using the Transit app (it’s available all across the country–it’s not a MSP-area app), and if you just plug your desired address into the app, it’ll tell you which buses/trains to catch, to get wherever you’re going–so it’s tasty food and a mini-adventure😁
Sounds like a lot of potential for bread pudding.
