Local Favorites [NOT 4/12/24]

Hi, friends!

Do you have a local/localish snack or drink that you swear by?

I love Old Vienna Red Hot Riplets chips. I shouldn’t, everything about this is probably horrible for me. But also, I’m eating them right now. They’re also fantastic broken up and used as toppings on mac and cheese (thank you, Gramophone restaurant, for that idea).

I had sweet Maui onion style kettle chips in Hawaii and was like wow these are addictively amazing. I’m starting to find Hawaiian style kettle chips here now. I don’t think they’re the same though, I think Lay’s makes them.

  1. G&W Meat used to have amazing landjäger, but it’s gone down in quality in the last few years. I assume it’s probably because of some understandable reason like they needed it to not cause hypertension with one piece thanks to sodium or something. Growing up, we’d have a plate of it sitting on top of the fridge and just pop off sections for snacks.

  2. I bought some spicy macadamia nuts at the swap meet on Oahu last month & have been trying to ration them they are sooooo good.  The lady buys them fresh from a Hilo grower & has her own roast & spice recipe.  They were pricey but I wish I bought more!  Most of the big name macnut companies are not using local nuts anymore.  Mauna Loa used to be the best & now I can’t even eat them.  They are using Indonesian grown nuts that have a bad aftertaste.

  3. Red Hot Riplets have always been a bit of a scorcher on my palate, so I tend to go for the Southern Style Sweet & Spicy BBQ Chips myself. (And at the Gramophone, my go-to sandwich has always been the Delcortivo, which they seem to have renamed rather recently as the Yogi.)

  4. Cheese, glorious cheese! White cheddar and French brie! While we’re in the mood, bring on the provolone! One whiff of the Wisconsin Swiss, my senses go reeling. Not to mention the Camembert—

    That’s enough, Cousin M

    • Oh it’s lovely!

I think it’s the wonderful amount of bright and colorful that Christmas decorations need to be.

It will be a noticeable contrast to Melania’s “Gulag in the Snow” theme in 2025.

      • Oh, don’t get me wrong. I’m a firm believer in Christmas Maximus. But that first photo, that lighting makes the East Wing colonnade look like the midway of a some sort of tawdry traveling carnival. That has to go.

Then the trees. When we had our Holiday Open Houses we used to put up two full ones and then a half one in the den, with child-friendly squishy ornaments, because that’s where we would park the children and they would watch child-friendly DVDs (!) overseen by whichever mother was feeling most helicopterish.

But. I often think too much is never enough, but it seems like Dr. Jill decided to spend the equivalent of the annual Department of Education budget on these tchotchkes, and too much is too much.

I enjoy Mel’s aesthetic. It’s so creepy and Mitteleuropäisher. Hansel and Gretel wouldn’t have made it out of the White House alive.

  5. There’s a local food truck called “Simple Fixin’s” that I have taught to make a true Chicago hot dog.  It’s really good.  They even stock the celery salt and sport peppers now.
