Hi, friends!
Do you have a local/localish snack or drink that you swear by?
I love Old Vienna Red Hot Riplets chips. I shouldn’t, everything about this is probably horrible for me. But also, I’m eating them right now. They’re also fantastic broken up and used as toppings on mac and cheese (thank you, Gramophone restaurant, for that idea).
I had sweet Maui onion style kettle chips in Hawaii and was like wow these are addictively amazing. I’m starting to find Hawaiian style kettle chips here now. I don’t think they’re the same though, I think Lay’s makes them.
G&W Meat used to have amazing landjäger, but it’s gone down in quality in the last few years. I assume it’s probably because of some understandable reason like they needed it to not cause hypertension with one piece thanks to sodium or something. Growing up, we’d have a plate of it sitting on top of the fridge and just pop off sections for snacks.
ive got my fishy man
in his fishy van
little pricey now
but delicious man
I don’t have a fishy van but world class fish store not too far away that keeps me happy!

you know….fishies is the one thing i would challenge islanders on
we know our shit here
would we win/maybe not…..itd be close tho
In our public markets they sell a bunch of fish that grocery store shoppers think are trash, but they’re great. Stuff like croaker, hake, spot and ling.
If Ling is Ling Cod that is our best cod but they get huge here.
Wikipedia says that’s a Pacific fish but ours gets shipped over from the Atlantic. I think fishermen are pretty sloppy with their naming. A lot of unrelated fish get called bass too.
The original Maui potato chips were amazing but now extinct (except for this bag?)

The Lays ones are shit! The closest to them are Tim’s.
I bought some spicy macadamia nuts at the swap meet on Oahu last month & have been trying to ration them they are sooooo good. The lady buys them fresh from a Hilo grower & has her own roast & spice recipe. They were pricey but I wish I bought more! Most of the big name macnut companies are not using local nuts anymore. Mauna Loa used to be the best & now I can’t even eat them. They are using Indonesian grown nuts that have a bad aftertaste.
Is it a volume issue? Mauna Loa has massive orchards on Big Island, are they importing a fuckton more to meet supply/demand?
Like when I was in Belize years ago, the farmers there told me that one of their biggest buyers of orange juice concentrate was the brand Florida’s Natural.
This kind of explains it but I don’t think they are going back to Hawaii nuts w/out losing a ton of business for these shit foreign ones.

on a similar note: my nephew would hunt pigs in a macnut farm & these boars had only ever eaten macnuts. Talk about best pork you will ever eat!!!
Red Hot Riplets have always been a bit of a scorcher on my palate, so I tend to go for the Southern Style Sweet & Spicy BBQ Chips myself. (And at the Gramophone, my go-to sandwich has always been the Delcortivo, which they seem to have renamed rather recently as the Yogi.)
Cheese, glorious cheese! White cheddar and French brie! While we’re in the mood, bring on the provolone! One whiff of the Wisconsin Swiss, my senses go reeling. Not to mention the Camembert—
That’s enough, Cousin M
Oh dear God. Jesus wept.

Oh it’s lovely!
I think it’s the wonderful amount of bright and colorful that Christmas decorations need to be.
It will be a noticeable contrast to Melania’s “Gulag in the Snow” theme in 2025.
I loved her Shining Xmas theme!
Or her previous “Space 1999 Bringers of Wonder/Blunder” Theme
Complete with rapey tentacle alien things or her idea of Xmas trees.
Oh, don’t get me wrong. I’m a firm believer in Christmas Maximus. But that first photo, that lighting makes the East Wing colonnade look like the midway of a some sort of tawdry traveling carnival. That has to go.
Then the trees. When we had our Holiday Open Houses we used to put up two full ones and then a half one in the den, with child-friendly squishy ornaments, because that’s where we would park the children and they would watch child-friendly DVDs (!) overseen by whichever mother was feeling most helicopterish.
But. I often think too much is never enough, but it seems like Dr. Jill decided to spend the equivalent of the annual Department of Education budget on these tchotchkes, and too much is too much.
I enjoy Mel’s aesthetic. It’s so creepy and Mitteleuropäisher. Hansel and Gretel wouldn’t have made it out of the White House alive.
The space is actually surprisingly small, and that’s just not tacky. It’s not. I have West Wing photos I may dig up and share someday.
The ornaments from schoolkids are perfect. They’re a counterpart to the what the monsters who are to come will do.
Seriously, this is a time to drop the snark.
If you say so, Jill.
There’s a local food truck called “Simple Fixin’s” that I have taught to make a true Chicago hot dog. It’s really good. They even stock the celery salt and sport peppers now.
Does anyone else buy them except you?
They say they’re popular.
Oh, and today is our anniversary. It’s a big one. This one goes out to the one I love.
Happy anniversary! Hope you got a chance to sit on the couch, maybe have a cup of tea, hold hands….
Happy anniversary! Congrats to you two love birds.
