He ended up losing his spot as Speaker of the House after the Ethics Committee uncovered huge problems with an alleged history course he broadcast that was essentially a rightwing propaganda outlet. It used, by the way, vicious rhetoric crafted for Gingrich by Frank Luntz, who is now prominently employed by NY Times Opinion editor Patrick Healy.

I read a chapter at a book store and put it down because it was so bad. Made me wonder about the whole genre of alt-histories. Most of them have to ask “what if the bad guys won” and it seemed many of the audience seems to wish it were true. Maybe not the intent of the writers, but it seems the audience who reads it wanted it to happen (like the terrible Confederacy Show idea that the Game of Thrones disgraced producers were pitching.)
On Wonkette during the Gawker ownership days, I got into online debate with some Southern guy who seemed to think that the South winning would have been awesome. Pointed out that logisitics, economics and even demographics weren’t in the South’s favor. Canada would have been the bigger winner.
Idiot also thought the South would have fought against the Nazis and I laughed.
Honestly I don’t know how that whole WWII thing would have worked out. I mean, the South sure as shit would have fought Japan, but Japan was in an alliance with Germany so there would have been defacto war there as well. I guess they would have just soft peddaled the European invasion until Stalin got sick of it and sued for peace and left the rest of Europe fucked over.
There was one alt history book about the South winning the war that I recall. Didn’t read it but someone who did said the author thought there would be three nations: US, CS and Texas, and that all three would have reunited for WWII. Can’t imagine how that would have gone. Fortunately I don’t have to.

They constantly harp about how the legitimacy of the Supreme Court is coming from critics on the left about their arbitrary, irrational rulings.
And now a Southern state is directly challenging the legitimacy of their rulings to back an obviously racist law.

Time is relative. When people say “first thing in the morning” I always follow up with “Great, so like 6am? That’s when my family are up and eating breakfast.” Which then gets the person to clarify what first thing means to them.
