    About 1,500 Marines from Camp Pendleton, California, were deployed to Los Angeles in 1992, and they were issued riot gear and given refresher training prior to their mission,  retired Army Maj. Gen. James Delk, who oversaw the California National Guard’s response to the riots, wrote in a 1995 Army case study of the riots.

    However, communications proved to be a challenge at times because Marines, soldiers, and police all use different terminologies, Delk wrote. In one incident, a squad of Marines accompanied police to a home in response to a domestic dispute. One of the police officers was hit when someone inside opened fire.

    “His partner grabbed him and as he pulled him back he hollered to the Marines ‘Cover me!’” Delk wrote. “Now to a cop, that was very simple command. That means aim your rifle and use it if necessary. To a Marine, and there were some well-trained young patriots in that squad, it meant something entirely different. They instantly opened up. A mom, a dad, and three children occupied that house.”

    Police later found more than 200 bullet holes in the home, but thankfully no one inside was hit, Delk wrote.

    …it’s specifically about a previous incident not now but…there’s a pretty famous case about joint enterprise in UK law that turned on one guy out of a pair confronting the police while armed yelling to the other to “let him have it”

    …the defense claimed it was an exhortation to surrender the weapon…the guy shot the cop so clearly took it to be the other thing…but presumably the task & purpose piece is the reason why the marines made.it known that contrary to secdef day-drinker they were not in fact fully trained up for what they’d been asked to do & would be spending the next few days undergoing appropriate training to not…act like they’re trained to in an urban environment?

  6. I can’t help with DOTs because I’m leaving for vacation on the 17th.  I will be checking out everyone’s posts though, and judging harshly.

    I was a little kid when Sly Stone had his famous “no-show” concert in Chicago’s Grant Park and it caused a riot.  I played guitar to “Everyday People” and “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” at my grammar school talent show.  Mr. Noel, who was my teacher and a bit of a hipster got a group of us together and those were the songs he picked.

      …that red states are just now getting the memo that even after they deny the use of SNAP funds to buy any food a kid would call a treat they’re still not going to be able to cover how much more a bunch of stuff will cost their state budget because the fed one has to pretend it isn’t on the hook to even pretend not to be giving away a bankruptingly massive giveaway to the have-mosts…is…while I sort of “get it” in the sense of seeing how we got here as we trundled along for as long as I’ve been alive & all…simply baffling to me?

    • …I think it’s that the last time the national guard were deployed against the wishes of the state’s governor was to protect civil rights marchers that pointed them to the memo…but…could be a bunch of other things that got them there, I guess?
